Mosquitos and other biting nasties in June
« on: May 25, 2013, 09:33:14 AM »
Hi I was just wondering four of us are coming to Kalkan on the 8th June and I was wondering what the Mosquitos are like and will we have to bring the extra strength Jungle to avoid getting bitten.  Last year we were there last two weeks in May and Olive flies were around, which we used Tea Tree.  Will they still be around and is their any other squibblies that we need to avoid.

Many Thanks
Janie

Heh, BL! Wouldn't fancy that job - spaying mozzies! I really would need to go to Specsavers!
(sorry to be so pathetic, but it did appeal to my sense of humour......thank you!)

 ;D ;D
Lancashire Lass, you will need repellent  I find the local stuff works better. Off Max for us....which I'm sure is something like 100% deet as it removes my nail varnish too :)
As BL says, some people get bitten and others don't - I'm with the bitten crew and they blow up and generally look like something I should be ringing a bell to warn people about - giving them a chance to either avert their gaze, or scarper. I'm trying the vitamin B1 route this year - as recommended on this forum - I'll try most things to be honest, and probably have ::)
If they're all spayed by the time we get there, I would imagine they'll be at home, feet up with a cup of tea rather than out looking for pray, so we've no need to worry ;)
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

Recently back from three weeks in Kalkan (lots of restaurant reviews to follow when I get time to write them up) and thought the mozzies and other nasties were very bad this year. I must have killed well over 50 mozzies in our bathrooms. And at least 12 jumping spiders fell victim to OH's shoe (while I directed operations from a safe distance). Not to mention the cockroaches.....
Come prepared with a full range of weaponry.

I only found out last week while having my nails done that the deet in mozzy repellent takes of your nail varnish......I actually thought it was sun lotion....duh! 8)
We usually use local stuff as I am obviously a very tasty morsel and have found that to work best......and therefore have bare nails after the first couple of days! Imagine my excitement this morning when I discovered roll on jungle strength repellent in Boots......now I can be bite free (hopefully) and it will still be worth getting my nails done before I go away

Oh Antler, how you make me laugh, but the sad thing is I can imagine you spaying Mossies (don't know why) ;D ;D ;D

Regarding the various flying/jumping/crawling pesky things, I hate to say a lot of it is a matter of luck!   Apart from a couple of "Mossie Noshes" on my bod, I have been lucky.  Might be something to do with the fact that my colleague is like fly paper, she attracts everything going, Jumping Spiders are her speciality >:D >:D >:D

Mossie bites on the foot are the worst. You can't get at them under your sandel straps to scratch and the itch drives you mad!! L

We are advocates of the B1 method, which (touch wood) as worked for us so far.

The reason some people get bitten and others not appears to be connected with blood groups!  Smart insects those female mossies ...!

Gosh Mags, where were you staying? We rarely see any creepy crawlies and a quick knock down spray in the evening, together with mossie machines usually keep them at bay in our villa. It's when you are out that you usually have to take care.

AnnDL, please don't worry, we've been coming to Kalkan for years and I've never been bothered by the critters...I'm bitten by the mosquitos and have ran screaming when one of those flying things we call the B52's come over - but that's it, really. I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to creepy crawlies so if they were really bad, I doubt I would be able to come back year after year...as lovely as Kalkan is, my fear would take over. You will have a great time :)

My family have a very bad response to mosquitto bites. We have tried everything going and I have to recommend a product called 'mosquito milk'. You can buy it online. It isn't cheap but it comes in a bottle with a roll on so you don't have to ruin your nail varnish. When you have put it on it lasts 8 hours and you don't have to cover all your body. You roll it on in strips, with a same width gap in between. It also has no smell. I can tell you now as I have just bought 6 bottles....it's very often sold out!

Hi

I've taken up your recommendation on Mosquito Milk and found a pack of 3 on Chemist Direct for £15.49, hopefully that will do the trick, my partner is very much the meal of the day for Mozzies so fingers crossed.

Kalkan Magic: our house is in the middle of the old town. We have an enormous grapevine shading our roof terrace, but unfortunately, it appears to provide a perfect habitat for jumping spiders  :o
Yes, LancashireLass, these horrific creatures are a reality, not a joke. Usually, though, they are fairly small - although even small ones can give you a nasty bite (much worse, in terms of allergic reaction, than a mozzie bite)  :'( :'(
