Regrets of buying in Kalkan?
« on: October 17, 2011, 11:49:34 AM »
Like a lot of people, you have these thoughts of what it would be like to own your own place in Kalkan.
Perhaps it's an age thing, early 50's and all that!
Anybody had any regrets about buying out there and perhaps wished they hadn't taken the plunge?

I know you were asking for people with regrets to post, just though you would also want to hear people who .....Never had one regret, best thing we ever did  8) 8) 8)

I was thinking about it and received several quotes some off plan etc and found most of the buiders etc very helpful.....however speaking to some owners and hearing their tales of woe plus the global downturn etc etc I decided not to proceed....I had no plans to rent out so factored that I would not see any income from my purchase so I can't comment on break even points etc.....I guess that would be on a sliding scale based on the cost of your property I worked out some figures on one Villa at 440,000 Euros and could see that I would never cover my costs by renting but again it was not a plan anyway......

We met a couple when we were out last month who seemed to have had a really negative experience of owning a villa in Kalkan. They had just sold it after it had been on the market for a number of years and were really glad to see the back of it. They felt like every holiday was spent working on their property and they had paid a lot of money out in repairs. It was such a shame to hear them talk about the place like it was a millstone around their necks - they were just glad it was "someone else's problem now" :(
All the owners that we've ever dealt with when renting appeared to be really happy with their purchases.
We can't wait for the "kids" to leave home, so we can sell our big house for a bungalow in UK and a place out in Kalkan :)...and bullfrog, its definitely an age thing ;)
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

i am someone who would love to buy a second home in kalkan. i know the topic is about regrets of purchasing. my regret is that my OH doesnt see it my way, and doesnt want to take the risk. one of his concerns which i can appreciate (just if pushed) :'( :'( :'( is that there are a large number of properties for sale, some at an inflated price (his opinion). so you could be very stuck if you wanted to sell in the future. Is it a good option to rent on a long term basis from owners who cant sell and who dont rent to the holiday season guests. that way someone like me could get to come over for say 6/7 months of the year and am looking after a property that might otherwise be staying empty unloved and unsold. that is until i can covince my OH to take a leap of faith and rise to the challenge of a second home in wonderful kalkan :) :) :) :)

would be interested to hear your views.

oh i forgot

we fit the profile circa over 50 (ish) :( :( :(

kids all grown and gone, coming home when hungry/broke and of course christmas, easter and any other holiday where they can "have a break from their oh so busy lives" whilst parents (who are just as busy if not more so) cook, clean, launder and generally send them on their way batteries recharged , us totallly kna oh exhausted sounds nicer.

and we own our own home and still have all our own teeth and hair :) :) :)

Sadly some of those buyers who have had real problems & are still having them, would not publish on the forum for various reasons, legal & otherwise, there are some horrendous problems in Kalkan so please be aware it's not all roses & plain sailing.

Just like most people that have had good experiences in restaurants don't bother to post about them, meaning that the negative posts stand out.  Just do lots of research before you buy and listen to those in the business rather than those who have a cousin who has a friend whose tennis partner's neighbour has a place to sell.

But dont ignor all the posters that say " no problems". As, as far as i can see / read / hear they well outweigh the problems that others had encounted  8) 8)  8)

Eniste - some of those in the business have been or are the problem. As previously said it is difficult to mention such things on a forum especially this one.

I'm running the quiz at Parc tonight and may ask the question 'Who sang the song 'Accentuate the Positive'?  The many people that have had positive experiences in buying property in Kalkan may simply ignore a post about regrets at buying which will, as almost always on EK, turn this into a moan fest, albeit without details for whatever reason.

By the way, according to Wikipedia, it was Johnny Mercer.

DRBD - understood, so why did anyone bother starting a thread which can apparently offer only basic yes or no answers and no detail.  Do people really need to be told to be careful when spending hundreds of thousands of pounds?  Actually, sadly, yes.

If only we had a public official or a restaurant owner to tear into without fear of legal action or embarrassment!

Why especially this forum?

It was interesting tho see that in Saturdays Daily Telgraph Kalkan was listed as one of the top twenty cheapest places to retire to
It states that  a brand new five bedroom villa with infinity pool overlooking the bay is on the market for £390,000. This must look a bargain to those potential retirees who live in London as it is about the same as the the cost of a basic two bedroom flat.
So perhaps the property market in Kalkan is going to perk up.

Is there a section on the forum where people can advertise their property for sale, maybe folk could deal direct and cut out the middle man?
