Shops, supermarkets, markets etc
« on: June 28, 2011, 04:36:52 PM »
Hi,
We are visiting Kalkan for the first time next year, although it's our 7th time in Turkey (not been for many years), having stayed in Marmaris, Altinkum, and, Alanya before. It's also the first time we have been self catering in Turkey having booked Truffle Apartments, which look great and have brilliant reviews on trip advisor and other sites.

Ok a few questions then, we will be eating out a lot esp at night but will also be having some meals in esp as the apart is fully equipped. Any comments for good bakeries, butchers, and are there any supermarkets that deliver to you I believe Smile does but not sure. We are also considering packing bacon and sausage in a cool bag and putting in our suitcase - could this cause a potential problem at customs - if so I would prefer not to bother. Is it worth bringing our own tea bags and coffee or can we buy at reasonable cost there. I have seen photo's of small markets there the fruit and veg looks great, which I am really happy about as we eat loads of salads!! That brings me to next question can we buy cooked meats, or cooked chickens to take back to apartment, I'm sure we can but just like to check.

Thanks for any valued responses, we are going next Sept.

Anne and Jim

Hi Anne and Jim

Personally, I would avoid potential problems at customs and not bother bringing those items out.  There are a few shops around that sell that 'produce' and some quite reasonably.  Within metres of Truffle there is a small restaurant selling rotisseried chickens for about 12TL(ish) and two good butchers.  In my view, Turkish tea and coffee are better than many so you could save more space by buying those locally.  There is a greengrocers less than 100m away from you with lovely fruit and veg and if you choose to shop at Adda, the return walk to your apartment would be all downhill.  Several restaurants also do delivery or takeaway and many of the most reasonable and best are again right on your doorstep.

Have to agree with Eniste about the bacon and sausages there was a thread on here a while ago and think someone did get them took off them at customs and I don't think it was pleasant experience from what I remember. My dad loves his bacon butties in the morning and when he comes over with us we always manage to find somewhere that sells it  ;D. Not seen sausages though (only the german type) but i'm sure there's somewhere.

If you fancy trying local sausage, you can buy really lovely spicy sucuk at the market - just slice and fry (it's like mini salami).  I hear the best one comes from Afyon and goes really well with eggs and probably locally sourced bacon!

Thanks for replies up to now have taken them onboard, think Jim can survive couple wks without sausage and bacon (english I mean)!!! He does like salami so we can try the sucuk. Am really looking forward to buying borek again - I esp loved the cheese ones we bought when last in Turkey and I am convinced I suffered withdrawal symptoms when we came back home!!! Roll on Sept next year and keep with the replies please.

Many, many thanks,

Anne

Don't buy any more bacon and sausage from tesco's for the next few weeks and you could treat your hubby to a quick break in Kalkan THIS September. There will be some great deals, it will be hot and a little quieter. And you can live like a king (and Queen) in the restaurants of kalkan. Regards

We stayed at Truffle a couple of years ago and it is in a great position for shops, on the way to Tesko, which stocks pretty much everything you would need, is a little greengrocers. I think it is used mostly by restaurants and they looked a little bemused when we went in and the total was the same each morning whatever we bought.

I always take sausage, cooked meats and cheddar cheese as have a couple of fussy eaters and I've never had any problems either.
Currently have a duplex apartment in Kiziltas which we visit as often as we can.
