Markets/Shopping in Kalkan
« on: October 19, 2009, 01:23:18 PM »
We are arriving in Kalkan on Thursday afternoon this week - would really appreciate knowing what time the market in on and what time it finishes? Likewise for the market in Kas on Friday?
Also what are good 'buys' in terms of clothing etc
Thanks!!

Turkey is one of the worlds leading producers of cotton and manufacturer of clothing. Most first quality garments are exported. But you can still get overmakes of garments on the market and in shops. Towels are usually very good quality so is denim. It is worth looking in some of the shops first to get some ideas. Marks and Sparks gets  a considerable amount of its stock from a factory at Denizli near Pamukkale.
The market serves the local population not just tourists looking for bargains.
Some years ago Tesco bought 50,000 pairs of levi jeans on the grey market. Levi claimed that these jeans were fakes as they had not been authorised for sale in England. The jeans were made by the same firm in Turkey on the same line. The jeans were not copies but real Levi, but produced for Eastern Europe. No difference just sold at a cheaper price than in Western Europe.
Bargains can be found which are not cheap fake tat.

I'd steer clear of the women's clothing, but the towels/linen are extremely good value and quality. We also like the ceramics and the fresh produce. You can get "pashminas" for a similar price in the shops, likewise the designer fakes. If you're there for more than one Thursday, try comparing the prices before buying - enjoy!
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

Thanks for all the tips - I do a fair amount of work in the buying area in the UK and from that experience know that a lot of the big UK retailers/wholesalers source from Turkey, and I thought some of the handbag manufacturers did so too. So its a question of whether we can sort the tat from the bargains then! Really appreciate the advice from everyone! Looking forward to Kalkan tomorrow....

Our next towels are made in Turkey..seen on the Market! beware though they weigh heavy in your luggage..if we intend to buy we take old towels with us(beach)bin them and replace with new ! jeans are a bargain but try them on (usually between van doors and boxes) often the sizing is different to the label ::)
cotton polo shirts i bought wash up smashing..pay a little more for quality(£4 for lacoste geniune fake..no different to my original!)
either way have fun bartering!! ;)
People Of Britain.. When your missus asks "Does my bum look big in this? Never say "Dunno your blocking the light."... just sayin ????
