Whats in your Kalkan fridge / shopping basket
« on: September 08, 2008, 07:51:18 AM »
Hi,

With myself and Jules off to Kalkan very soon we were talking about food shopping and thought it would make an interesting thread and maybe give us some ideas we have missed.......

So, when you are in Kalkan, what food goes into your fridge / shopping basket? Have to admit other than Efes and fruit from the market we eat out a lot so tend to just buy breads, tomatoes, sandwich meats etc

Fresh Bread, Sheeps Cheese, Tomatoes, Small Cucumbers and Olives.

Not only would that be in my shopping basket, but it would be my last meal of choice if I were facing execution!!! Simple perfection.

Baklava from Nur patisserie. Fattening but sooo yummy.
Currently have a duplex apartment in Kiziltas which we visit as often as we can.

Gin in the freezer, lots of olives, cheese, tomatoes and cucumber.  Also yoghurt, and beautiful fruit for breakfast.

Also, am totally amazed by our turnaround, but have adopted the mummy cat and 6 kittens, so have filled the cupboard with cat food!   8)

well the bacon from Yali is very very expensive. Last time we brought quite a bit from the UK.  The tomatoes in Kalkan though are like a totally different fruit to those you get in the UK.  Rosib tells me that the Turkish method of farming is totally organic - she knows that stuff, dont ask me how.  But a lot of those usually in the fridge.  Lemon Tea,  Efes (of course), salady stuff generally including cold meats.  The Turkish eggs go really nice scrambled! mmmm  Bill

now MrsEK wont let me live this one down but last time I went to the butchers on the main street by the Turkish delight shop and i bought what looked like cubed lamb skewers to BBQ but despite my best BBQ efforts it was chewy unidentifiable something... still dont know what it was to this day so we decided it was wild boar to sound exotic!!

Aaaahh - reason being - wrong butcher or you overcooked it..!!  Try the new Tavuk galerisi orange shop near the Smile supermarket - I think the guy''s name is Bulent...very friendly and delicious tender meat - and all in english so Jules won''t be buying horse or camel or whatever she purchased that you bbq.d..!!! lol!!

Smile supermarket and the butcher is between Tesko and the taxi rank - sort of on the bottom roundabout.

Sometimes if we are staying in we do a spag bol and make a garlic bread with the flat loaves or we get a takeaway delivered from Oz Adana.  I think its really relaxing to have a shower, put another pair of shorts on and not have to worry about doing my hair or makeup.  We wouldn''t want to stay in every night but nice to do every few nights. ;D

we bought steak and chicken from him (Bulent)..he was cheaper and better cuts than the butcher opposite(above Berzigan)...plenty of salad..try the tubs of burgers from the supermarkets ..they aren''t like uk ones but are nice''ish...ice cream ,and chocolate bars...mmmmmmmmmmm ;)

Go to the lovely Guru next to Adams on Kas road, they make a fresh chilli salsa type salad and you buy it in a jar for 5ytl. Purchase one for hols and one to take home as once you have tasted it you will want more! you can taste the chilli, garlic, coriander lemon juice oooh i am salivating ! I have used it with goat/sheep cheese on crackers, marinated fresh Sea Bass from the market on the BBQ, added olives and stirred through Pasta, it has so many uses and it is delicious!! but please save me some as I arrive on the 26th and thats where I''ll be heading! Enjoy!

I have to recommend the new fruit and veg store (green grocers) on the site of Adam''s old restaurant. The best quality fresh fruit and veg I have found at the lowest prices.
