First visit to Kalkan
« on: April 15, 2008, 09:46:58 PM »
Hi, I am visiting Kalkan for one week in June and would appreciate your recommendations with regards the best places to eat, drink, shop (including what days and where the local markets take place) also current cost of living in Kalkan.
Any other useful advise e.g. best beaches, snorkeling spots etc, would be appreciated.

Cheers

phew so many places to mention and they will have been covered so many times before, eating for me Ibo and check out the toilets amazing, Lykia, Coast, and loads and loads more, beachclubs I love Kalamar and Yali. Shops there are some good small shops without too much hassle there isnt loads of them but they are of good quality on the whole.

hi DB.the local market is on thursday,it has all he usual " genuine fakes" and is also great for fruit and veg and cheese and spices. It is located on the road out of the village up to the bus station. As for the cost of living.....you can spend as much or less as you like...there is something for every pocket. As for beaches?a day in Patara is a must..cracking beach! but make sure you get a brolly..the breeze is deceiving and you can sizzle if you aren''t careful ;)
People Of Britain.. When your missus asks "Does my bum look big in this? Never say "Dunno your blocking the light."... just sayin ????

 ta ta for now

Hi DB,
Kaputas beach - just outside of Kalkan on the Kas road is beautifully unspoilt - there''s no cafe to speak of (but you can buy water, fruit etc from a van on the road before you go down onto the beach and there are some nice restaurants further along the road) nor are there any facilities on the beach. So take a parasol and a couple of beach towels and be prepared for a bit of a climb on the way back but its worth the trip. Other than that the beach clubs are dotted around the area - they all have something to offer and everyone has their favourites - we love Palm and Mahal (only because they are more sedate than say Kalamar or Kalkan) - just get a water taxi from the harbour.
As Blue Lizard says the market is on Thursday, or you could go to Fethiye on Tuesday for what I think is the largest market in the area - buses go from the bus station, or you could hire a car (Adda offer discount for EK members).
Where to eat and drink....hmmm how long is a peice of string? Loads of choice to suit every pocket and really nice quality food - IMHO. There''s a thread on favourtites in the bars and restaurant section the only problem is with so many places to eat, you''ll spend the next 10 years returning to Kalkan as you will want to try them all
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)
