Now aren't these wonderful posts about the tranquil beauty of Kalkan the perfect advertisement why it should not ever change, become too Anglicised nor get loud with booming music from competing bars!? I rest my case. Thank you people for explaining exactly what, in a few sentences, makes Kalkan so special - its Turkishness.

That first glass of Raki and Fanta lemon, and thinking where shall we eat tonight.

Seeing all the familiar faces welcoming you back.

The street cats and dogs.

Handbag shops!! :) :)

Favourite thing? That old Turkish saying.... "when our hearts are full, we sing... when our hearts are overflowing, we dance"
and seeing that sentiment in action.

We get out to our Villa about four times a year in June when we arrive it is invariably late (don't quite know why, it's just the way the flights work out) we sit on the roof terrace with our pre-packed sandwiches and a glass of wine looking down on the bay, for anyone who has ever had doubts of being "up" in Kiziltas above the D400, you should give it a try, the peace and tranquillity together with the views is just stunning! We never take it for granted, to put into words how special Kalkan is, is almost impossible.

Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.

Actually Clara, to be fair I think it was Antler who mentioned it on here first. But it's a lovely saying and totally sums up the Turkish view on life :)

Incidentally, Headroom, I see from your Villa pics that you have an ice-cube machine.

Do you use it? Your guests?

Did you buy in Turkey? I have thought about getting one, but not done it yet...

It's there for anyone using the villa (us included), they are on sale at Arcelik.

I just love how the timeless, ramshackle backstreet bars and eateries sit happily side by side with elegant roof top terraces or harbourside restaurants. One minute you are watching a gaggle of local guys sitting in a backstreet, drinking cay and playing 'OK', the next minute you are sipping cocktails at the marina watching a live opera performance from the deck of a yacht in the harbour. And all this - set against the dramatic backdrop of the bay and islands, and the haunting silouhette of the mosque - is what makes Kalkan magical for me.

Thanks for nice comments re writing.

Well, I work in design/PR/Communications for the NHS - but that's largely irrelevant. When you feel passionate about something - as I do about Kalkan - the words just come.

I've been sitting at home for the past 6 months since I mashed up my leg in Berlin last year, and it's given me time to think about what I want for the rest of my life. Even though I've been mainly housebound and immobile, my mind has been bursting with thoughts, ideas and plans. Dreams of Kalkan kept me going through two godforsaken weeks in a German ghetto hospital following an op to save my leg, and 6 months of vile Manchester winter weather back home. Now, the sun is out and I am just starting to walk again without crutches. Exactly a week from now (to the minute) I will be touching down in Dalaman, as I'm taking my family to KK for the first time. I bought a little place in town just before my accident, and walking out onto my terrace next week to see the sun dancing off the sea, will feel like being reborn. I won't quite be ready for doing cartwheels down cardiac hill, but I do hope to be dancing in the 'Moonlight'.  8)

Agree with everything folks have said before , especially the view as you round the bend but always look forward to our first lunch , which is usually long, order too much food......cause we're sooooo excited and drink too much wine........... So need a wee siesta !!
Every year we always say ' right do we need all those dishes' and agree not to do it again especially on first lunch..........but know what it never happens.   :D
