Kalkan is turning into supermarket city!!
BIM opposite the bus station is very popular. It is part of a very large chain and a "no frills" retailer.Full of the basics and at low prices, for example we pay 1.30lira for milk there. They have deliveries daily and sell chicken, veg and bread too.The new A101 supermarket opening on Monday is run along similar lines many will know both of these from Kas and Fethiye already.
We are now just waiting for the building of Migros to be completed. They will offer a much larger range of goods.
No sign of Gempa yet and old Tescom shop still empty but maybe Kippa will go in there.
I pity the sole traders, how will they be able to compete? Saying that,I am now a regular at BIM.

I don't see the need for all these big supermarkets and wonder how they will make a profit during the winter season?  I only hope this doesn't mean that Kalkan is set to expand even more :'(    Does anyone have any idea why these big supermarkets are springing up all of a sudden?

TalkTalk - Above is a link to a photo and article on KTLN.

kalkanbelle. Of course there is a need for them. Already local people are telling us that they save so much by going to Bim that the established supermarkets have had to lower their prices on basic foodstuffs, milk. rice and etc. There are now a lot more people living in Kalkan through the winter and more people will come in from the villages to save money.
The obvious answer to the last part of your post is money. Consider how the supermarkets in the UK have spread over the years. Starting off in cities, then large towns as the profits flowed in and now into small towns.
Kalkan, with it's large tourist population and comparatively high prices, was always going to attract the big players.

Babs  -   Yes it is closed

But the rumour is that it may become a KIPA [which is the Turkish offshoot of Tesco]

So watch this space

Gempa is set to open soon.Signage now in place and shelves to be stocked.Leaflets delivered to local houses.
Migros is coming along really well and building work almost finished. Its several floors high and looks very smart and big.Am sure it wont be long before its opening too.
Just waiting to see what will happen with the Tescom building.Kippa maybe.
Smile Supermarket is still open and very convenient if you are staying at Truffle,Babs.
Sevil continue to have a supermarket in Yesilkoy, maybe the guy Blue Lizard mentioned is there or maybe he has found work in one of the new shops.
Will be interesting to see how the price war develops,a lot of competition between BIM and A101 now.
Kalkan market and markets in the surrounding villages are still popular for fruit, veg and other food items.
So much choice......

Hi all - I only hope the small individual supermarkets survive, otherwise we will have the exact same as we have here in the UK -  absolute rubbish cloned food and drink no matter what town or city you are in - with the big faceless society of Tesco etc cleaning up - with no care what happens to the small man/woman and his family trying to provide a service without having access to the discounts the larger supermarkets command.  When Tesco tried to open in  Ireland they were forced to purchase locally from farmers etc for some of their goods in fact they were boycotted in many areas - hopefully we will see the same friendly faces in the local supermarkets who have looked after us so well over the years.
Of course I understand if you live locally you have to shop wisely, but for the few weeks a year we are there, we dont mind supporting the local people who are trying to make a living.

Since there is so much of a 'me too' mentally amongst the supermarket developers, how about another gym ?  Air-conditioned, with more equipment and more classes ...  I'll be the first to sign up.

Or some good, affordable tennis courts ?e

Or an olympic pool to swim laps ?

Hi - can anyone tell me whereabouts the new Migros supermarket is being built? Coming in June with large family group (numberswise not girth!) so sounds like this would be good place to stock up. Also will there be nearby car parking? Thanks so much. xox

There's definitely been an explosion of supermarkets during the winter months I just wondered if any of them are open (or plan to be open) 24hrs? Think that's the only thing Smile will be able to offer over its competitors ::)
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)
