Hi can anyone tell about the new food shop opened near Petrol Station is it any good?
-
Kalkan is turning into supermarket city!!
BIM opposite the bus station is very popular. It is part of a very large chain and a "no frills" retailer.Full of the basics and at low prices, for example we pay 1.30lira for milk there. They have deliveries daily and sell chicken, veg and bread too.The new A101 supermarket opening on Monday is run along similar lines many will know both of these from Kas and Fethiye already.
We are now just waiting for the building of Migros to be completed. They will offer a much larger range of goods.
No sign of Gempa yet and old Tescom shop still empty but maybe Kippa will go in there.
I pity the sole traders, how will they be able to compete? Saying that,I am now a regular at BIM.
-
Thanks, Amba has the work started on Migros.
-
They had the roof on the new Migros by the time we left on 10 January.
-
Anyone know what has happened to the lovely little man that used to run Sevil now A101 has taken over it??...
-
No I dont know, am sure he will pop up again soon.
Has anyone taken any photo's of the new Migro's just wanted to know how high as I have a villa near, dont want to lose our veiw .Thanks

I don't see the need for all these big supermarkets and wonder how they will make a profit during the winter season? I only hope this doesn't mean that Kalkan is set to expand even more :'( Does anyone have any idea why these big supermarkets are springing up all of a sudden?

TalkTalk - Above is a link to a photo and article on KTLN.
kalkanbelle. Of course there is a need for them. Already local people are telling us that they save so much by going to Bim that the established supermarkets have had to lower their prices on basic foodstuffs, milk. rice and etc. There are now a lot more people living in Kalkan through the winter and more people will come in from the villages to save money.
The obvious answer to the last part of your post is money. Consider how the supermarkets in the UK have spread over the years. Starting off in cities, then large towns as the profits flowed in and now into small towns.
Kalkan, with it's large tourist population and comparatively high prices, was always going to attract the big players.

have I read this right....is Tesco/Tescom/Tesko....however its spelt, closed? we are staying at Truffle apartments this summer and that means we'll have more than 50 yds to walk! ::)
-
Babs - Yes it is closed
But the rumour is that it may become a KIPA [which is the Turkish offshoot of Tesco]
So watch this space
-
Gempa is set to open soon.Signage now in place and shelves to be stocked.Leaflets delivered to local houses.
Migros is coming along really well and building work almost finished. Its several floors high and looks very smart and big.Am sure it wont be long before its opening too.
Just waiting to see what will happen with the Tescom building.Kippa maybe.
Smile Supermarket is still open and very convenient if you are staying at Truffle,Babs.
Sevil continue to have a supermarket in Yesilkoy, maybe the guy Blue Lizard mentioned is there or maybe he has found work in one of the new shops.
Will be interesting to see how the price war develops,a lot of competition between BIM and A101 now.
Kalkan market and markets in the surrounding villages are still popular for fruit, veg and other food items.
So much choice......

Hi all - I only hope the small individual supermarkets survive, otherwise we will have the exact same as we have here in the UK - absolute rubbish cloned food and drink no matter what town or city you are in - with the big faceless society of Tesco etc cleaning up - with no care what happens to the small man/woman and his family trying to provide a service without having access to the discounts the larger supermarkets command. When Tesco tried to open in Ireland they were forced to purchase locally from farmers etc for some of their goods in fact they were boycotted in many areas - hopefully we will see the same friendly faces in the local supermarkets who have looked after us so well over the years.
Of course I understand if you live locally you have to shop wisely, but for the few weeks a year we are there, we dont mind supporting the local people who are trying to make a living.
-
Hi Irene,
Agree 100%, just hope there are loads more that feel the same as you 8)

Since there is so much of a 'me too' mentally amongst the supermarket developers, how about another gym ? Air-conditioned, with more equipment and more classes ... I'll be the first to sign up.
Or some good, affordable tennis courts ?e
Or an olympic pool to swim laps ?
-
Hi - can anyone tell me whereabouts the new Migros supermarket is being built? Coming in June with large family group (numberswise not girth!) so sounds like this would be good place to stock up. Also will there be nearby car parking? Thanks so much. xox
-
i'm told it's just up past the market ..other side of road...and just below new BIM supermarket.... ;)
-
Yes Blue Lizard you are right, its on the left hand side opposite the cemetry.Looks like plenty of car parking outside.
-
Thanks for replies - know where that is so reckon I will be able to find/drive to without too much bother. xox

There's definitely been an explosion of supermarkets during the winter months I just wondered if any of them are open (or plan to be open) 24hrs? Think that's the only thing Smile will be able to offer over its competitors ::)
-
I don't remember this being there last September . Has it opened since then?
-
Cosetta, I agree with you regarding the gym. Wouldn't it be nice to have a gym with A/C and showers. I was amazed at the price of the membership for such little equipment and facilities. Anyone thinking of opening a Fitness First?
-
Hi Bee - the gym actually does have a/c (when they choose to turn it on - or you can ask for it to be turned on!) and I'm pretty sure that there is a shower in the communal toilets for the whole Yali complex. Yes the prices are steep (by Kalkan standards) but I think the facilities are good - 4 good running machines, 2 cross trainers, 1 rower, 2 recumbent bicyles, plenty of weight machines, fit balls, free weights, mats and 10 spinning bikes (there are also 3 spinning/rpm classes on Mon, Weds & Friday - 9 sessions in . Not a Fitness First by any stretch of the imagination but I don't think that is too bad really do you...?? ???
-

All of the new supermarkets have opened/will open since end of December.
-
Does anyone know when Migros will be open?
-
I will still use my little back street shop! Open all day every day ALL year never fails. I am only there on holiday so I really only need basic's - It would be different if I lived in Kalkan variation and all that! But hey look what tesco and the likes have done to England!!!!!!
-
Well said Molly 8)
-
....don't forget what they've done to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland too ;)
