what's the spiciest food on the menu???
« on: November 06, 2011, 10:03:52 AM »
I was absolutely gobsmacked at the standard of the restaurants on my first (but not the last!!) visit to Kalkan this year, but I did find myself hankering for something spicy....y'know something with a kick in it. I didn't come across anything on the menus I looked at. MOH loves spicy food. Do any of the reatsaurants do anything with a kick in it? From what I saw they all seem to do pretty much the same type of thing and whilst we really enjoyed what we ate, the choice of having something a bit more spicy, (dare I say a curry??!!) would be a welcome change.

Adana kebabs can be a bit warm and if you want more heat just ask for more chilli!

I think at The Olive Garden they do a goat stew, which is cooked with generous amounts of cinammon so is very aromatic though not spicy in the sense of a chilli "hit"
I always enjoy Antep as a starter as it usually has a nice chilli kick and also stuffed vine leaves which in many places have a warm cinammon kick too.
I'm always surprised at being warned by some waiters that the dish I have choosen is "very spicy" but in actual fact is invariably very tame.
I remember years ago when my son aged then about 10, opted for an Adanna Kebab, the waiter was concerned that it would be too hot for him and was shocked to see him finish the entire meal, barely noticing any spice at all.

The "hot and spicy" pizza at Akin is quite hot. As is penne arrabiata at Merkez Cafe (almost too hot for my husband and he's no wimp over spicy things!).

Ths spicy sucuk pizza at Parc can really have its moments if you ask teh chef to crank up the spice levels.  The liveliest thing I have eaten in Kalkan was çiğ köfte, which I believe are simply hand-moulded bulgur patties with lots of chilli and tomato and other herbs.  Was it Johnny Cash who sang 'Burning ring of fire'?

tillymint, my BH is a chilli lover and cooks with them all the time at home (scotch bonnet are his particular favourite.. :o) but he's just about given up on finding anything to his level of "hot" in Kalkan. He'll often add tabasco to his salads to give his food an extra kick if he's missing it...but generally he now avoids food that are described as hot or spicy as he gets dissapointed. He simply enjoys all the other flavours instead :)
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

Thanks All. So I am not alone then. Ooooh, an Indian... yes, that would be wonderful! Only if it was real though, as you said.... any of the English residents ever thought about opening one, I wonder... I imagine it would do a fair bit of trade,  maybe even in the winter, with so many English there.

Blue Lizard it actually only lasted a couple of months at most

Seemed to have problems with the staffing and the fact that they were not from Kalkan

The great thing about the restaurants in Kalkan is they will do anything to meet your individual needs unless it would be quite wrong to mess about with a classical Turkish dish. One of the best dishes I enjoyed this year was at the Barhat (can't remember of to spell it) I had their version of spaghetti favourite but said i liked it a little sweeter than normal and hot. They added sweet paprika and hot chillies. It was the best I've ever had. The spaghetti was just cooked and the sauce to die for. I had it again a few days later and I didn't even have to ask....they remembered and did it spot on. I haven't found any other resorts that are like this. Spicy ........just ask!

Living in Kalkan I can honestly say I dont miss too much about UK but to go out for a good indian curry would be wonderful and imagine being able to buy a takeaway!!!! Luckily I have a husband who can make a great curry, so can still manage to get my curry fix often!

Cooking for myself tonight. The choice was sate sauce or curry. I chose the sate. After reading this thread I wish I had chosen curry. Mmmmm I can smell it.

yes we visited INDIGO (is that the right name?) on the harbour a few times. The curry's were lovely, as good as the ones we have in Manchester so it is a shame it closed down.

Fingers crossed about the Indian.Trouble is I have had curries in various places in Turkey and they have never matched up to a good "british" curry.Only one anywhere near was from the place that closed down.

Love curries, but to be honest I think Kalkan can do without an Indian takeaway unless it would be run by genuine Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi chefs. And from what I've read on here the natives get restless  if outsiders move in and open restaurants!
