Football Free Bars/Restaurants
« on: June 06, 2010, 09:12:05 PM »
Hi All,

We hate football and can't stand TVs in bars - (surely we're not alone here?) We booked our hols last October and (I) mistakenly forget about the World Cup.

Does anyone know of any bars that will not have the dreaded game(s) on and therefore have a nice quiet drink as normal?

Try drinking in the mornings instead of the evenings.....You'll find the bars will be much quieter and there will be no football on too.  >:D

Other than that... good luck!! Even in Kalkan!!

PS.... You could try the Garden Cafe Bar close to Korsan Kebab by the harbour  ;)

There are many bars not planning to show football. I spoke to a number when we were there two weeks ago. The restaurants / bars  I know of are Baharat, Kaya, Kalamaki, Trio, kleo but I'm sure there are many more. You'll still find your little bit of peace and quiet.

You should be able to escape it and enjoy the traditiional Turkish ambience in Cafe del Mar - they don't have a tv and am sure won't be planning to install one for the football!

I am looking for a free football bar - is that the same thing?!

From last season's experience, I would imagine that the following bars WILL be showing matches, but very few restaurants - Swan, Yalı, Cinar, Ibo Kebab, Omar's, Moonlight, Utopia, Lounge, Piazza & Parc Kalkan.  Some may be selective and just show the earlier (afternoon)matches in the background.  Best to shop around, but enjoy your holiday anyway and please excuse us if we get a bit excited, even during England matches!

Thanks for asking this question Chillout, Like you I'm not keen on footy either and when in Kalkan like a bit of peace and just watch the world go by. When we've been before the bars we seemed to end up in places like the Moonlight had sport on their widescreen. My other half reckons he's a rugby man and not mad on football but he wouldn't be able to resist watching and there endeth any sort of conversation LOL! Now I'm clued up I can steer him away to the quiet ones, thanks chillout!  ;D

Thanks Clara,

Like minded people I guess? I remember trying to enjoy a meal last September at the Saffron. The loud televised footie coming from Utopia (underneath) was awful. Rami (then part owner Of Saffron) tried to have a word but it fell on deaf ears. And there were only about 6 people all together at Utopia! It was'nt just us who were complaining by the way. We now have a better idea of where to go this year!

There's a lovely new bar opened just up from Moonlight, past Iso's Kitchen called Eden...didn't see the big screens here, but even if they are the place is set in a garden so you can sit away from any action. This place is new and very quiet so with all the bars on the main drag showing footie, this may be a little haven. Lush on the harbour front also doesnt have a TV
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

(Garden of) Eden was there last year, glad it's back again.  Beautiful quiet setting.

They opened last summer and occasionally had a TV right at one end of the garden where lots of locals were watching Turkish league matches on Sunday evenings.  That said, the garden has plenty of nice quiet corners in which to relax.  This year they have breakfast bar style tables and stools up on the road too.

How did I miss this place last year..? We were staying at Dere Apartments and walked past this spot everyday for over two weeks - there and back!
Our attention may have been diverted by the lads from ISO's who claimed to our daughters to be the best looking waiters in Kalkan and tried to get us to eat there each night! I'd be useless as an eyewitness to a crime ::) BH hadn't noticed it last year either but we did go along earlier this week and it was lovely...said they'd only been open 4 days - hadn't realised that was just for this season :-[

Yes Eden is open (went the other day) and has a huge screen with Tv and playstation so would imagine they would be showing the footy
