Taking food into Dalaman
« on: May 02, 2010, 11:41:48 AM »
Hi All

We are going self catering this year and are on a tight budget so were going to take things like cereal, crumpets, pasta, tuna, sauces, rice etc

Can we take these in our hand luggage as won't have room in cases??

Thanks
Wendy

Would imagine that sauces would be classed as liquids therefore not allowed in hand baggage. Not sure about the other things but would think they be better in hold luggage.

tuna would also be classed as a liquid because of the oil ot brine it is in

Indeed, any "wet items" would be classed as liquid so would have to be hold baggage (even thickish "pastes" would be seen as liquid). Stick to just putting the dry items like uncooked pasta/rice in your hand luggage. Also, if you are on a budget, don't forget the local markets. We went home with 3 carrier bags crammed, full of fresh fruit and veg for the equivalent of £5!! Wonderful sweet radishes the size of grapefruits for a few pence that grate up to make a great base for a salad!

Hi Wendyg
I am sure you can buy most of these items in Kalkan for the same price as the UK. You can easily buy rice, pasta, pulses, for less than in the UK in the supermarket/market.
You can buy fresh veg and herbs easily and cheaply to make your own sauces.
The things you can't easily/cheaply buy in Kalkan are bacon, pork pies, pork scratchings, muscovado sugar, salt and vinegar crisps...which must be why I keep recieving order requests from people when I am due to visit Kalkan!

Jars of ready made sauces are expensive here. If you bring packets of dried ingredients (ie Colmans sauces) you won't have a weight issue. I certainly wouldn't carry rice and pasta as they aren't expensive here but do bring breakfast cereal as there is less choice and it is more expensive.

Hi Kevincat
Pork scratchings are very bad for you! Therefore only 2 bags will be in my suitcase ;)

Just a quick reminder for people, at Dalaman they scan your bags as they previously did before check-in - they also scan again after check-in before passport control and take any liquids etc off you.

However, gone are the days of the scanners on the gates  :)
