success after a break in!!!
« on: October 07, 2009, 07:48:14 AM »
After a break in in May at our apartment in Kisla, yesterday we went to the jandarma to retrieve some of our stolen items.
The culprit was caught and over a 100 items found in his room.
well done to the jandarma. Over the last 4 months they have apprehended several burglars.
The commander at the station was very helpful and we were pleased to retrieve some jewellery of  sentimental value.
Well done!
anyone who has had a break in this year perhaps should go to the station .

Congratulations to the Jandarm and to you for the return of some of your things.  I heard that some burglars were caught, but then never heard more about it.

Did they say whether the offender was local or from elsewhere?

Turkish or foreign? Every country has its criminal fraternity but I guess I am hoping that you don't say 'British' because I would hate to think that we are exporting our slime to Kalkan  :(

Last night yet another break in on a residents property
They go out for two hours at 8.30 pm - return at 10.30 pm - house ransacked - safe stolen
Obviously the property must have been targeted and watched for this as it does not appear to have been an opportunistic theft as everything was locked
Why can' the Jandarma monitor the two entrances / exits from the village at the Kas Road turn off and the new traffic lights and stop everyone
OK so it will be inconvenient but it may catch someone , especially if they are not local
Anyone have any solutions to this as it must not be allowed to continue

2 hours and still no-one has provided a solution for all crime!  Like all break-ins, this one is very sad but still no need to turn Kalkan into East Berlin.

The Jandarma monitor Kalkan's approach roads when they want to catch their fugitives and National Service dodgers, but it's probably not practical 24/7. I think the only solution is prevention - burglar alarms (until, as with car alarms everyone is immune to their wailing) and security locks and bars.
We too had property returned having reported theft to Jandarma 5 years ago - the thieves were from east of Antalya, 'worked' nights and caught the first bus home. Their apprehension was by luck, not clever widespread policing.
Nomatter what some EK 'ostriches' say, this is not a minor problem - a far higher percentage of properties are targetted than anywhere in the UK. As long as tourism provides the 'haves' for the 'have nots' the problem will remain. The real solution is 'bobbies on the beat' but sadly that's not going to happen.

I'm intrigued to know how putting jandarma at the entrance to Kalkan would help.  "Good evening sir, what is your business in Kalkan today?" - "oh, well I have come to burgle some villas".  "Aha, you can't come in then!!"

The fact is opportunistic crime will occur in any holiday resort where people leave valuables in unsecured villas.  This is not a new thing, you are just hearing more about it these days due to forums such as this.  There are not apprehendable gangs of thieves creeping around Kalkan in stripy shirts with swag bags - the crime is opportunistic and therefore impossible to stop.  Asking questions like 'what area are the burglaries taking place ' or 'were the thieves from Kalkan' is utterly pointless as house burglaries do not come with a list of rules or a map.  Opportunistic crime is by its definition just that - no one looking, open door, get inside.

The only way to cut down the number of burglaries is to secure your villa with locks and window bars, not to leave valuables lying around and to use the safe.  An open window, no matter how small, is an open invitation.

I regularly walk my dog in the Kiziltas area after dark. On many occasions I have met 2 jandarme patrolling the area on foot. It may not be 'bobbies on the beat' but in the absence of Kalkan police force, I feel must be a deterant to would be thieves.

These crimes do not appear to be opportunistic as you say
The thieves are targetting villas of foreigners which they seem to be able to monitor and from where they will have richer pickings.I would be amazed if Turkish houses, in say Akbel were being robbed with such regularity
The last house that was broken into was locked - the householders went out at 8:30 pm for an hour and when they returned - a locked double glazed window had been forced open and the safe ripped from the wall and taken away
Please tell me exactly how this is opportunistic??

You're very lucky to get your stuff back Hannah.  I had my lap top stolen from my bedroom in February, was told by the Jandarma in March that it had been found near Istanbul - and  despite endless treks to the Jandarma station I still haven't got it back!

.....and I lost all sense of direction one night after a lot of gin. Luckily I got it back in the morning, albeit with a raging headache and nausea ;D ;D

I don't know whether or not this helps but back here in the U.K. my friend went on a police burgulary prevention course and got told "Make your house appear to have more security than your neighbours" Even an empty alarm box on the wall is better than nothing. People see what they expect to see.
