Smoking Ban
« on: February 26, 2009, 02:52:40 PM »
Can someone refresh my memory. Does the smoking ban in Turkey extend to restaurants and bars this year?
Just typed "smoking ban" into the search box but it didn''t find any results - I felt sure it''s been the subject of threads last year ???

Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

I think the ban came in last year in may,but they gave the bars/restaurants 12 months grace to get used to the Idea, but from what locals told me no one would take notice anyway, can you imagine all the fun if they tried to stop people smoking pipes ect in Istanbul !

I remember when this happened in the UK, there were detailed specifications about what constituted an enclosed space (bus shelters, restaurant terraces?).  It will be interesting to see how/whether it is enforced.  The old idea of having a no smoking section was about as pointless as having a no peeing section in a swimming pool.

i wondered about this...many places are outdoor anyway...friend of mine was outside local pub and moved along by bouncers "you can''t smoke outside here mate...growl growl....!" but he  could stand outside a shop 20 yards away and smoke?...seems confusion over this, will Turkey be any different? don''t think so..i''m an amateur smoker and enjoy an occasional one, but i won''t go and sit on a rock in the wilderness to do so ...i''ll go without ::)

P.S..friend of mine was thrown out of the local baths for peeing in the pool!!..........he was on the diving board at the time!! ;D

What will happen to the coffee houses where they smoke the Nargile(Hubbly Bubbly pipe)...it seems so turkish it would be a shame for it to vanish.... ::)

I remember when the smoking ban came in in the UK and the Turkish Coffee shops in London kicked up over their hubbly bubbly pipes - think they may have even gone to court over it but I don''t think they won the case. I think they had to set the pipes up outside, can''t remember. I''m a non-smoker but BH is a 10-a-day man (more on holiday), but never in a roof terrace restaurant. We both find it very unpleasant, even on a roof terrace, if someone is chain smoking on the next table whilst we''re eating...yuck!!.
I think the rules are that enclosed outdoor places have to be non-smoking, which is perhaps why your friend was pounced on, BL
You can''t smoke in Football Grounds here...and you can''t get much more outdoor than that?

Thanks for the link, Eniste. Seems the ban in restaurants and bars comes into force the day after we go home :(.

The smoking ban in bars and restaurants comes into force in July this year.
Nothing is really work unless you would rather be doing something else.

Kalkan4eva...my chumly was in the high street!!outside a pub..made to stand upstream outside a hairdressers?DUH!!...i fully expect to see equal confusion in turkey....for instance would you be able to smoke outside the moonlight,a non food establishment...until they put nuts/popcorn on the table?grey area?...i can see the harbour full of milling smokers puffing and chuntering away ;)

I''m not sure how the legislation will work when it comes into force. Is a rooftop area inside? Not sure. But certainly outside the building is ok. For most people that smoke it''s not going to make too much difference, seeing as most of the time in the warmer months it''s an outside life.
