Water fall
« on: January 26, 2009, 11:53:08 AM »
Has anyone noticed the incredible river running down the hillside from Bezirgan towards Kordere. Its impossible to miss and quite close to some new villa builds.

This is the Kordere  (blind stream) from which the village of Kordere, just above Kalkan, takes its name. The stream  is active whenever there is very heavy rain and carries excess water from the mountains to the sea. It follows a path which has been carved out over thousands of years. Near its source in Bezirgan there are the remains of roman pipes and underground cisterns which kept Bezirgan safe from flooding two thousand years ago. Unfortunately, these water management systems were destroyed about a hundred years ago because their function was not understood.  Parts of Bezirgan now flood every year.

The water comes  along the dere (pronounced derri) which runs through the old village, alongside a great many houses and it has never been a cause for concern -  although its noise at present is a  bit overwhelming for properties which are adjacent to it.  If you want to see it in full spate, take the steps up from the beach which go past the old mosque, and turn to your right and walk up the hill when you reach Kaptan''s restaurant, the dere runs alongside this road all the way up.

The dere runs about 400 metres from our house in Kordere and we can hear it loudly today. Once the rain finishes it disappears completely - hence the name blind stream, for most of the year it is totally dry.

we live along side the stream in the old town. this afternoon i would say that its running at its highest level for a few years, however as it is an old water course it does not give us cause for concern. what does worry us is the future road widening schemes which may cause more flash flooding down the same course. if the river was already in full flow such as today, the addition of a sudden amount of water could cause problems down stream. and i am sure that this will not be taken in to account by anyone working on the road project!
