Book group
« on: November 16, 2008, 11:58:33 AM »
Hello all,

My husband Alan and I have just retired to Kalkan. I''m interested in joining or starting a book club.  I''d be willing to start one also but don''t know the logistics  yet of obtaining books.  How do you all get your reading materials?

Cheers,
Pat Fisher

Hi Pat

We have been talking about a book group for the last few months, so I am sure that you will find a lot of support here.

Books can be delivered via Amazon UK, or via similar organisations in Istanbul which offer a wide range of books via mail order. There are a number of good book shops in Istanbul and Ankara.

We also share books amongst ourselves, buy at various book sales held to raise money for charity and browse the collections held by many hotels and restaurants.

Linda, at Abi Travel has an extensive collection of books donated by holiday makers when they leave and she sells these for 2 lira each to raise money for animal welfare. She will be opening the Abi Travel office a couple of times a month during the winter to sell books.

As so many people will be leaving over the next few weeks for Christmas, I suggest you think about the New Year as a starting point for the book group.

regards

Lantana

Yes, as Lantana says, it is easy to get books sent here from Amazon, US or UK.  The mail is generally quite reliable, we receive various things fairly frequently.

Dear Lantana and Carol,

Thank you for your response to the book club post.  I would have responded much ,ore quickly but didn''t quite understand how the system works.  That''s great news about the Amazon shipments; I''ve relied heavily on them in other countries.  I''m going to post a call for a January group asking those interested to post some suggestions so those leaving for the holidays may be able to bring some choices and/or multiple copies back.

Cheers!
Pat
