mobile phones and correct code
« on: June 22, 2008, 04:06:24 PM »
Probably a silly question but if I use my English phone to make a local call in Kalkan do I have to put 90 first and then drop the 0 in the local number? I haven''t made local calls abroad before just "phoned home" but may need to this time although don''t want to go to bother of buying a local SIm as will only be a couple of calls.

Yep - got it in 1 - just pretend that you are in the UK and phoning Turkey - you have to put 0090 and drop the first zero....same thing applies coz your mobile doesn''t know as such where you are even though you are logged through a local corresponding mobile phone network!!  :D ;)

Cheers!

hi we have found it to be sooo cheap to make calls from the local post office in the village soo much cheaper than using mobiles  we dont bother even txt ing now as that can run up a huge bill being charged for sending AND recieving. We used to have a turkish mobile but if you only visit from time to time we found it is not worth the  trouble.

....and half price in the Post Office on Saturday and Sunday...the cheapest way to phone anywhere  :)
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

Just seen the messages about mobiles,  Whenever we go away my daughter runs up a huge bill phoning and texting her b/f who will also be in Greece when we are in Turkey.  What is the cheapest way, she will phone and text many times and will not want to go to the post office every time she needs to talk to him.
I have told her to forget him for two weeks but do not think this will work, I think she should leave her phone at home!!!

She could buy a Turkish pay as u go sim card, approx £10, she can do this at the Turkcell shop, she will need her mobile phone and her passport. I have often done this when staying in other countries, and get them for friends when they are here.

Yes - but to use her UK mobile phone with turkish sim card - she will need to have it registered otherwise it will be blocked and will NOT be usable in Turkey either with or without UK sim card...that has happened to me so I prefer not to mix and match sim cards but I now have a registered turkish mobile and turkish sim....I really don''t think that it is worth doing that without registering your UK mobile - too dangerous AND added to which you have to be certain that the shop DOES register your UK phone - simply saying they will is not enough....

How about just using MSN at an internet cafe - much cheaper...!!

Just go to Baris and buy a cheap mobile and sim card he will register it straight away, you can buy half decent phone about 20 quid sometimes there is an offer for sim and phone packages or if you buy a good phone they are all open phones so you can use it any where or sell it on.

A UK mobile used with a Turkcell sim will not be blocked for use in Turkey until after 3 weeks of use in Turkey

Go to the post office and buy a pre paid phone card. I have just bought one for 7.50 lira with 100 units on it and after several phone calls (both to UK mobile and land lines) still have 30 units left. Of course not as user friendly as a mobile phone but a lot cheaper.

A holiday romance would help bring on temporary amnesia - and slash your phone bills. Everyone''s a winner ;)

Just to add to this I have just been on the phone to T-Mobile (UK) regarding using my phone abroad.

It would seem that it is free to recieve texts (and picture texts)
It would cost 40p to send a text BUT any picture texts will be 20p and come out of your monthly allowance (so unless you use up your allowance they are free !)

Calls should cost £1.40 a minute to make and £1.30 a minute to receive BUT if you add ''wolrdclass'' to your tariff - for free - it looks to go down to 55p a minute. This option is only available on TurkCell though (is there TurkCell coverage in Kalkan ?)

The other handy tip (from the helpful T-Mobile woman) was to ensure you deactivate voicemail as you can end up double paying for any message left and costs can rack up easily. Easy to switch it back on when you get home.

.......... and no, i dont work for T-Mobile :)

seems a bit random regarding Turkcell and Tmobile. Myself and OH both have T mobile phones and while I almost always get connected to Avea he seems to alternate between Avea and Turkcell. Not sure how to ensure you always get Turkcell to take advantage of the deal described ???

You should be able to select your network manually. If the phone has automatic network search, take this function off and set it to Turkcell.
