What is your favourite Turkish dish?
« on: June 08, 2008, 12:35:21 PM »
my ideal meal would be to start with sigara borek (am cheese mad) followed by either (cos I can''t make up my mind on this one!) Hunkar Begendi or Turkish Musakka

lamb cubed and in a tomato, onions, garlic sauce with an aubergine puree - it does go by another name too but I can''t remember that one.

Hunkar BeÄŸendi literally means ''the Sultan liked it'' (as he apparently did!) - I have seen it translated as ''Sultan''s Delight'' so that could be the other name you mean yoyo.

Nope that wasn''t it either, I knew the English translation, it was starting to irritate me so I looked in one of my Turkish cookbooks and it isn''t actually that different - Begendili kebab!

Anyway back to my original question - what is your favourite Turkish dish?

I had Hunkar Begendi last night at Atlantis.  It was beautiful.  Lamb so tender, spices so piquant.  Envious anyone?

I''ll admit the Borek is a good starter but I prefer mine with the bacon in it; oh god my mouths'' watering already. As regards mains, the Pepper steak at Atlantis takes some beating actually.  Accompanied with an Efes it''s damn near unbeatable!  lol   Bill   P.s.  Yes I envy you Carole, thanks for bring it up!  lol

I know that "international" cuisine has taken over in Kalkan nowadays but there are some really good Turkish dishes out there if you look hard enough for them.  So either everyone tends to go for International or just can''t make their mind up on which Turkish one to choose - I''m hoping the latter (and for some inspiration on something I haven''t yet tried).

Don''t get me wrong, I''ll quite happily go for the international dish, but if there is something more Turkish on the menu, I''ll go for that every time (as long as mushrooms aren''t involved!) :-*

My other half had the most fab dish at Zula cafe/restaurant on our last night in Kalkan. I don''t know the Turkish name though but we were told that it was an old Ottoman dish. It was long pieces of steak on aubergine puree with the most delicious tomato gravy on top. I had ordered some thing else which was also very nice but I couldn''t help finishing his food off too. Will definitely be going back to have a whole plate of it for myself when we get back to Kalkan.

Oh sorry didn''t know anyone was counting, but as you ask yes lots of things were very memorable. If you would like a list - I liked the villa we stayed at in Kisla it was very spacious and quiet, Yali beach club, Boat trips from the harbour, Kalkan beach before 10 am, strolling along to the lighthouse after dark, playing with the puppies by the ice cream cart in the harbour, strolling round the shops and generally just taking it easy in a very idyllic spot. Ok?

I have found 3 Turkish restaurants here in Columbus, Ohio and have  become somewhat known at 2 of them. The wait staff all know that I am planning a trip to Turkey and the owner of one stops and lets me practice my rudimentary Turkish on him! He seems quite pleased that I try.  Last nite I ate there and had the Hunkar Begendi. YUMMY!! I love it, actually my 2nd time to have it and so far it qualifies as my favorite. My daughter got the moussakka which was also quite delicious...We started with the sigora borek and finished with almond pudding and rice pudding. The whole meal was totally wonderful. Can''t wait until Sept. when I get to have the food in its own country!!

Imam Bayildi (or Fainting Priest) at any of the restaurants in Kalkan.

Not had a bad one yet, and I''ve enjoyed many. Its making me hungry just thinking about it. The joys of the humble aubergine.
