Mobile phone useage.
« on: May 06, 2014, 09:04:14 PM »
Hi, can anyone tell me if I can buy a sim card in Kalkan to work in my iphone? I used my phone from Kalkan last year for mainly texting, but my bill was horrendous when I got back home, so I was just wondering if there was a cheaper alternative.

Thanks

I think the phone has to be registered in Turkey for the Turkish SIM to work...?
This has been covered before so try the search facility above whilst you're waiting for some replies...
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

If you and all your family/contacts download the whatsapp app then you can text for free anywhere.  And I have the Skype app to make very very cheap calls to check up on my parents when we're away.

You can use a non-Turkish registered phone with a Turkish SIM for up to 2 weeks before it is barred.  The Turkcell shops in Kalkan sell PAYG voice/TXT/data SIMs.  These are usually the best option for visitors.

Alternatively there are plenty of wifi hotspots in Kalkan - restaurants, bars, hotels, etc - so if you and your UK connections use WHATSAPP text messages are free as are voice calls if you use VIBER.

Good luck.

Hi
I use the BT Smart Talk app on my iPhone. If you use BT at home the app enables you to call any UK number including mobiles, when abroad, as if you are phoning from your BT landline. You need to be connected to wifi though. Unlike Skype etc the person you are calling does not need to have any software/app to receive calls and you can call landlines, 0800 and 0845 numbers . The cost depends on your BT account. I get free calls up to an hour to landlines so if I phone them using the app it's free.
I use what's app to text and send photos.

I do not have a smartphone and when I am abroad it costs around £1.50 pm. to call back home and also the receiver pays that if on a mobile.

Can anyone tell me if I make a call out in Kalkan to  friends staying in another hotel will that cost the same?

All I know about phones is to call and receive...do not even know how to text. Mine is just for emergencies. :o

If you use a UK registered phone outside the UK (i.e Turkey) to another phone in Turkey, the call is treated as if it originated in the UK.

Thus the receiver in the other hotel would pay the excess fee.  The reasoning is that the caller may not know the recipient is in another country, and should not be expected to pay the extra charge for the overseas call.  The call recipient pays, as they (should) know they are abroad.

Once, when I as in Spain/Gibraltar my company phoned me to get some information on a project.  The call charge for me was around £9!!  They got billed for it on expenses when I got back!

Thanks chris, that is what I thought. I do not normally use my phone out there as I only call home in an emergency. Then I  use the hotel phone which incidentally was not too bad, cheaper than the mobile rates.
