Turkish mobile phones - call barring?

We have a Turkish mobile phone and Sim card that we purchased a few years ago and use it on a pay as you go basis when we come over to Kalkan in May and October.  As it is normally 4-5 months between each visit we always, upon arrival, go to the local phone shop in Kalkan to top up the credit and have it reconnected so that we can make calls whilst we are there.

We wanted to ask if anyone is aware of a change in the law recently with regard to Turkish mobile phones?  We have read that unless we have it registered and pay a fee to the local tax office, we will not be able to use it as all calls from, and to, the mobile will be barred?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

I'm not sure why this has been moved to the owners lounge? It isn't only owners who use Turkish mobiles and pay as you go sims when in Kalkan

Tomcat, not everyone looks at the owners section. There will be regular visitors who like you use their Turkish mobile and sim who a) may know the answer to your query or b) would be interested in the answer. Just sayin....

As far as I am aware this only applies to phones brought into Turkey ie purchased in the UK .  There shouldn't be any problems if your phone was purchased in Turkey.

Correct! I wasn't aware of it last September, and got the Turkish Vodafone SIM installed in my UK smartphone barred after 10 days.

Charlie and si18665 - Thanks both for your help and advice, it is appreciated.  Hopefully this should mean that we are ok as we're reasonably sure that the mobile  phone we purchased was not imported.
