Live music at Midtown
« on: April 28, 2013, 07:21:46 AM »
Just to let you know that, starting soon, there will be regular live music at the Midtown Cafe & Bistro (next to Pasaport Pizza on the Nur Hotel site).

Music will be varied (not just blues!) with something for everyone.

Watch this space - and if there is any particular type of music you want to hear, post it here!

The only live music most people want to hear is Turkish. Who wants Benidorm-style Brit band entertainment in a beautiful, quiet location such as Kalkan!?? Next there'll be Karoke on Saturday nights. What with the new Indian restaurant, the typical Brit 'lets completely take over the country and ruin it' style tourists have well and truly arrived! Heaven help The lovely people of Kalkan!

Interestingly, when the Nur Hotel used to have live music nights alternating between Turkish music and western, the western nights generally won hands down - and the majority of people attending EITHER were locals... which kind of blows your theory.... :)

So... Kalkan is for tourists only?

In the main, yes. That's why you were presumably advertising the music on a Kalkan tourist/ex-pat resident forum!?

I don't really understand what your problem is, Bazza.

People of all nationalities like live music, whether it is Turkish, modern, asian, african or martian and whether they are residents, ex-pats or visitors. Surely there is nothing wrong in filling a void and catering for that requirement?

There are rules in Kalkan about live/loud music, which are designed to ensure that music doesn't interfere with others' enjoyment of the town. It's quite simple - if you don't like the music on offer, just stay away... but please don't presume to limit other peoples' choice of entertainment. That's just arrogance.

Maybe you would be interested in coming to a Turkish live music night? :)

Hi Martyn E

It sounds great, just what a lot of people want when on holiday, we will certainly be popping along in August.

Another vote for traditional Turkish music but as long as its not an Elvis, Michael Jackson etc tribute we'd be happy!  ;D

Traditional Turkish for me, or a nice quiet guitarist with vocals - as they have at the Fish Terrace sometimes :)

What a great idea MartynE. I think a nice mix of traditional and more modern turkish music eg Aklan style!!! And mellow music of any era would be lovely. We will certainly pop along in August as we love listening to live music while we relax.  :)

Oh bazza here we go again. Nobody is trying to ruin Kalkan just provide a little diverse entertainment which everybody enjoys now and then. Kalkan is a tourist town like it or not the Turkish people are there to make money out of us and why not if we enjoy the services provided on holiday. I love Kalkan and cannot see it being ruined by music nights I presume Baris who is Turkish will be involved in them.

So it seems a Turkish trend is developing. Shame my previous comment explaining where I am coming from was removed. Maybe the moderator is biased too!

Joycie - yes, indeed, Baris is involved as it's his cafe! He is a drummer and loves (and plays) both traditional Turkish music and modern western music as well. The house band will also feature a Turkish bass player. But there may also be some guitar-only nights. I think Baris just wants to experiment and see what works best. The old music nights at the Nur always drew a crowd but people did sometimes comment that more variety was need, so Baris is very keen to keep as many people happy as possible.

As I see it.... everyone is welcome, as long as they are happy, polite and respectful - and mindful of others.

A bit like this forum, really  ;)

Martyne - when do you think these music nights will start?  We arrive soon and we love live music of any sort (except heavy metal LOL) as my hubbie plays guitar and really enjoys listening to others play.

I went to Funchal in Madeira last year. It really reminded me of Kalkan, quite upmarket, lots of gorgeous restaurants and bars etc. I agree that it is a little more busy and a larger resort but nevertheless it reminded me of Kalkan.

We went to a little bar that had a traditional Portuguese band who played modern music - Coldplay, Emilie Sande, Adele etc etc but with a Portuguese twist. It was fantastic!! I have to say that there were not many tourists and was predominantly locals even though it was peak season. We had a fantastic night, and was nice to have songs that we knew with a traditional twist. Maybe this could be an idea? Turkish twist obviously.  :D

Just what's needed since Belgins stopped doing their live music.  Turkish for me any time but all live music is great. Well done Martyn E.  :) :) :)
