Water skiing/paragliding???
« on: June 17, 2012, 02:48:10 PM »
Hi All
Im new on here and im coming to Kalkan for the first time with my family in August - cant wait. I was just wondering if anywhere does water skiing or paragliding and if anyone had an idea of prices for both of them?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Emma

Hi Emma
Yes both are available.  Waterskiing is available from Kalamar Beach Club or the Marlin dive school on the harbour.  They also take you out from various beach clubs such s Patara Prince or Mahal. Paragliding is maily from Kas but I think they will come and pick you up and bring you back.  No idea of costs I'm afraid - a bit daring for me.  If you look at the Marlin website they may have more details.
Enjoy your holiday!

Halil is based in Kalkan. He usually has a stand just at the top of the street leading into the old town and quite often found showing videos of paragliding on a large screen.  Ask any of the locals and they'll point you in his direction.  My teenagers and their friends have gone paragliding with him several times and really enjoyed it.  From memory it is around £40, this includes pickup from your accommodation to the jumping off point which is a drive into the moutains of around 45 mins.  Most landings are at the harbour in Kalkan.

The water sports company in the harbour is actually called blue marlin, they offer all kinds of water sports including waterskiing and wake boarding lessons.

hi emma, i've never done either in turkey, but i remember recently reading an article by a travel blogger about bougainville travel (in kas) that offers paragliding. from the article (which i cant seem to find now) these guys seem to be pros at this.
i know that volume travel (in kalkan) offers this also, you can check with them.

A note of caution, you should double that your holiday insurance covers these acivities, as not all do

Does Halil still have his stand in town? I've wanted to do this everytime I've seen it advertised, mainly in Olen Deniz, but have wondered if i have the bottle to do it. I've just looked at his website and it looks to be really safe so may just go for it this year.
$ weeks today that we are coming back so I need to get some plans together. I know Mrs P wants to go into Fethiye so that's one day covered. We've done most of the sites near by so will have to think of places to go, a Yildiz boat trip will be another day so it's time to started thinking. Any suggestions welcomed.

My OH did this a few years ago in Kalkan and in my opinion the health & safety was very poor, it took a couple of attempts and looking on was very scary! as the ropes kept getting tangled. Of course jumping off a mountain is not going to be without risk, also getting up there is not for the fainthearted.
I would be very careful and check that they have all the right permits etc and check your travel insurance very carefully to ensure that you are covered for these type of sports.

I don't know if this true but I was contemplating paragliding with my son in Kalkan a couple of weeks ago. It was strongly recommended that we should go to Kas because the paragliders in Kalkan are unregulated by the appropriate authorities. The reason being that wind/air conditions in Kalkan are generally not suitable.

Like I say, I don't know if this is correct but it made me think twice and we ended up water hammocking instead in the comfort of our own pool - the conditions for this were perfect.............

We also heard something along those lines after the event after speaking to various locals, and I was not surprised

We had guests this summer, 6 of whom went paragliding from Kalkan.  They told me that the instructor is a retired military parachutist instructor (if I remember correctly!)  They found him very good and very careful.

I can only coment on our first hand experience, maybe they have changed hands since then.
When considering jumping off a mountain I think it's best to be very cautious and check as much as you can and always ask to see permits, etc
