Sun Shade advise sought
« on: October 31, 2011, 04:10:57 PM »
Currently we have several large sunshades, made up of an iron frame covered by a green 'horticultural' mesh, serves the purpose as a shade but a bit too 'horticultural' for the boss.. also probably should be replaced for next season ( a few tears etc..) if you want to take a look at the shades see my website tour for image. website details in signature below.

The way the iron work is laid out it should be a simple job to replace with the more trendy 'woven canvas' style of shade.
the total shaded area is approx 54sqm so I want to get this right! (and at the right price)
what are the learning points from others that have shaded areas like this, what material, approx price, any recommended supplier etc.. was I right to nearly faint when quoted a price that equated to nearly £23 / sqm... :-\

any help appreciated.

Stuart

There is a man in Kinik market who sells the beige colour canvas

It is 1.5 m wide and as long as you want it - cost this year was 3 TL a metre

Then you have to have it made up.............

I was considering having some sort of shady thing on our roof terrace but was thinking about the wind and the winter. Anyone any experience of those interwoven type shades? Or those sail type shades? Do you remove them in the winter?
Any input appreciated.

You definitely need to take them down in the winter otherwise the winds could destroy them

The rains here can be very dirty and also if they do not dry out properly they seem to attract mildew type patches

I also saw on a forum that if the shade is to be washed in the future you need to get the material washed before it is made up as the poster found their shade didn't fit the second season after they had washed it.

Oh, we've had cream canvas from Suliman on our swing seat and inside, hope that doesn't shrink when washed.

Well we had awnings made for our villa by the guy on Kalamar Road, near the Asfiya.  They were the under and over type, about 5 m long and 4 stips so about 3.5 m wide, in canvas.  Cost !50 l about 18 months ago.  Problem was they shrank by half a metre on each strip when washed.  In addition they were up during heavy rain in October and they were not only filthy, they went mouldy as they dried.  So recommend pre-washed fabric and definately don't leave them out over winter.
