Carpets/Rugs
« on: May 30, 2011, 08:25:20 AM »
Happy Bank Holiday everyone !  We are visiting Kalkan for the 1st time in a few weeks and we are thinking of purchasing some rugs/carpets.  Can anyone give information on where the best bargains, choices and any other information that might assist us?

Many thanks in advance

Hi

Very little in this area - a couple of places in Kas

Couple of shops in Fethiye but expensive - also the carpet weavers association workshop / saleroom between Saklikent and Tlos - again expensive

You really need to go to the East to find something genuine and affordable

Sorry  :(

Kenan owns and runs Turkmen carpets and kilims opposite Doy Doy restaurant. He is kurdish and extremely knowledgable about all carpets and kilims. He has a good range from cheap to expensive and you get what you pay for. Kenan is not pushy and is eager to help and give advice, but is aware that buying a carpet is or can be an expensive investment and not to be rushed into.

His family has been in carpet  production and selling for many years and have taken part in expo fairs across europe. Try his web site www.kalkancarpet.com That will give you some idea on types, ages and prices.

Another alternative is Unique in Paspatur (old city) Fethiye run by Cem where you will find not only carpets but original hand embroidered throws, bedcovers and paintings. Cem is also a very knowledgable man on all things Turkish.

We have bought one or two kilims from Kenan at the carpet shop opposite Doy Doy.    He volunteered to bring a few we were interested in to our house to see how they looked.    He was not at all pushy, was very knowledgable.     He happily took away the kilims we decided against.  We always look in to say hi when we are in Kalkan.    He had a wide range of carpets, some very old and expensive, but also plenty of budget-friendly kilims.   We will certainly go back to him when buying more.    Could recommend him from our personal experience.

I can recommend Kas and Carry we got ours from there, beautiful quality and we did barter, we had looked everywhere for a lime green and deep red, but everything seemed to be dark blue with red, we found what we were looking for in this shop in Kas, on the right hand side just before you get to the harbour, walking on the same side as Bim. he also gave us detailed instructions on how to clean/wash etc, lovely man.
