Perfect holiday music?
« on: May 07, 2011, 01:42:18 PM »
So, there have been a couple of mentions within the forum of ideal 'holiday' music for a new bar (jazz, chill-out). Now don't get me wrong - in a place as steeped in atmosphere as Kalkan, no one needs to have a background soundtrack of Turkish music more than I do, and sometimes, only utter peace will do, but I have to admit that I am sometimes drawn in when I unexpectedly catch the strains of a great vintage song from home coming from a distant bar.  And I got to thinking... what would other forum members like to see on their ideal holiday 'soundtrack'?  I love music; I make my own compilation CD before every holiday, and share with local bar owners. There are already 6 of mine circulating in Kalkan, and waiting to be played at the Rosehip bar. I am off there again on 11th/21st May and am only half way through my next playlist. I'd welcome any suggestions/contributions from other forum members, and you never know, next time you are strolling through the streets, you may just hear your song!

So far I have:
Samba-pa-ti - Santana (standard track on all my CDs!)
At the river - Groove Armada
Slave to Love - Roxy Music
Drops of Jupiter - Train
Waiting in vain - Bob Marley
Light my fire - Jose Feliciano
Unfinished sympathy - Massive Attack
Summer in the city - Lovin' Spoonful
Just another day - John Secada
Silent Sigh - Badly Drawn Boy

Given the wide cross section of people who contribute to this forum, it would be fascinating to hear your preferences. I mostly come to Kalkan alone and it would be lovely to have a drink and shoot the breeze with any fellow music lovers who are in Kalkan over the next couple of weeks.

Hey, thanks for joining in!  Dock of the Day has definitely made it!  And when I was searching for 'I can see clearly now' - I also added the classic 'I can hear music' - Beach Boys.  I just previewed the Hugh Laurie album you mention on You Tube - looks interesting - a far cry from Bertie Wooster!

We always wack this one on full pelt as soon as we arrive and  have opened the first bottle of Angora and sit on the terrace looking at the views and thinking ....wow...this is heaven...

The guitar mix version of 'Boys Of Summer' is great! One for my band to do I think.  8)

Summer Breeze :-)

For me.. anything by Santana... especially Samba Pa Ti or Europa... the latin vibe just sets the mood.

Apart from that, when I come to Kalkan my iPod normally has a selection of stuff... anything from  from Stevie Wonder & Average White Band, to Allman Brothers, Cream, Free  & Led Zep, to newer music from Alexandra Legouix. O0

Kenny G- Those long hot evenings with the master of the sax.
Summer breeze.
Summer-the first time-"was a hot afternoon, the last day of June".......
Summer in the city- Marshall Hain.
Parisian walkways.
Long hot summer(and its 95 degrees in the shade)-you know the one.
I can think of loads that bring images of Kalkan-hot lazy days by the pool, beer on the side and lovely evenings in town with a nice meal and good company. Roll on August.

As many of you know, music is in my blood and soul, always with me, but I take none with me when I go on holiday. I love being pleasantly surprised sometimes by the music I do hear from bars, restaurants etc., sometimes familiar, many times not. Ali from Kaptan has a superb collection of jazz, blues, soul, rock and sometimes a fusion of these styles.   But its the unpredictability of strolling along and suddenly hearing music and waiting to see if it means something to Chris or me.  If it does we linger, if not we stroll on, non the worse for it. Lovely.
When I'm peacefully dozing half asleep in the sun, sometimes I will string together brilliant(?) lyrics into a tune, but when I've struggled to wake up and find a pen to write them down,   they've gone! Maddening.

                                                                Cheers, Allan. 8)

My good lady decided to "borrow" my music and i tunes to download on to her i pod.
Once on the plane I thought I would listen to "my" music on my i phone.
I glanced across and she was having hysterics........she had managed to wipe all my music ranging from soul, reggae, Pink Floyd to  the Verve and load 64 tracks of the Supremes!... >:(
Not happy, funny but not happy.
I woke up last night to find the ghost of Gloria Gaynor standing at the foot of my bed. At first I was afraid.......then I was petrified

A I said in a previous post, I don't bring any music with me on holiday. We will be in Kalkan soon and all that may change!  My music head has recently been full of the band VINTAGE TROUBLE, a Soul/Blues/Rock band I have to listen to just about every day. I first saw them on   'Later... with Jools Holland' a few months back and was instantly hooked. Please check out the guys on
www.vintagetrouble.com  where you can hear the tracks on their Album 'The Bomb Shelter Sessions.' Also some great tracks on youtube of course
Magic music!   Cheers, Allan.   8)

ps let me know what you think!
