Indian food in Kalkan.......Yes or No ? ? ?
« on: April 21, 2011, 09:08:18 AM »
Hi,

Not sure if this has been asked/done before........We all know Kalkan is packed with great restaurants, which we love, but would something different be a good idea............so, do you think Kalkan is ready for an Indian restauant   ? ? ?       We ( me and o/h ) would (sometimes) love to be able to go for an Indian meal while we are on our (14 day) Kalkan holiday  :)     What do the rest of you think ???

Cheers KD.

It didn't even last a whole season. If I remember rightly they didn't serve alcohol and you had to take your own.

We'd give it a try.  I will probably get shot down for this, but in my opinion, as lovely as all of the Turkish food is, sometimes it's nice to have a change - especially if we are away for 3 weeks.

I think one of the hotels had an indian night last year, but we didn't get chance to try it  :(
Currently have a duplex apartment in Kiziltas which we visit as often as we can.

Taking your own booze to an Indian is standard practice in some of the best curry houses in Bradford and is a positive advantage as it keeps the cost down.
I would have thought that providing the food was of a good standard an Indian restaurant would be popular....Turkish food is superb but during a 2 week hol a change is as good as a rest.

It was a shame for the people who ran that restaurant. I really enjoyed their food when they opened in the May, a lot of it was vegitarian. When we went out in the September, they had packed up and gone back to England.
A lot of dirty tricks were played on them by the staff/owners of the other places either side of them. I don't think that they liked the competition from outsiders.
As I walked in there one night, someone in the end bar told me that they were serving dog in the Indian. I told him mmm, yummy. (Not that I would ever knowingly eat dog, cat or horse.) That set him aback somewhat.
There - over there, there are.            To - Going to
Their - belongs to them.                     Too - In addition, Also
They're - Short for they are.

I think the problem with the no alcohol was that holidaymakers who wander along and just decide on the night where to eat didn't know they didn't sell alcohol and consequently hadn't brought their own with them and when they found out moved to a different restaurant. Most people on holiday want an alcoholic drink with their dinner in the evening.

Over the years the menus in Kalkan restaurants do seem to have become a bit samey, understandable as they are all competing hard for business and need to concentrate on the big sellers.

A proper Indian would add a bit more variety and could be great if it took advantage of the fantastic quality of the vegetables/spices in Turkey (but not interested in a standard curry house using bottled sauces).

We never got to visit the earlier attempt but do remember it stoked up a lot of hositility at the time.

Agreed - variety is after all the spice of life.  A good ruby is always a treat and there are only so many things you can do with a piece of chicken!  Too bulky a menu can often put people off.

Not sure if anyone remembers "the Jolly Roger" which served wonderful curries and was run by Pauline and Errol who now have Owlsland up in Berzigan. Always loved the food they offered, a mix of traditional Turkish and some amazing curries :)

All this talk of curry is making me very hungry and my planned white fish baked in foil is looking less and less likely.

I agree a good quality curry restaurant would be a positive addition to the fabulous Turkish cuisine on offer which as already said does get a bit samey after 14 nights.

Only 44 sleeps to go until we see the bay.

Hi,   The reason I asked this question in the first place is....... if I had a £ for every time I have been asked " Is there an Indian in Kalkan" by guests, family, friends or just people I have met while in kalkan, I would be worth a small fortune  ;D.

While I think an Indian restauant ( sit down ) would be a great addition to the already fantastic Kalkan restaurant selection. I also think that a -proper- take away service would be great.

Talking to (the above) people after they get back from their Kalkan holiday it is clear to me that more and more people are staying in at night and eating at the villa/appartment than used to, I am told this is to help keep the cost of the holiday down.............. Just imagine, a curry night in, by the pool and under the stars, ahhhh what bliss..... !!!!

Yours hoping

Sorry I would have to say no. I enjoy indian food but would prefer to eat authentic turkish food when in Kalkan. Also in the extreme heat of summer couldn't face curry of any description!
