Its a nice mosque & if you are in town you can't be far from it anyway.

What is the problem regarding the mosque?   Please remember you are visiting a Muslim country, it is their religion, and you will come across a lot, with regular calling to prayer (esp. during Ramazan).  How often do you hear English church bells ? - not enough alas.   ::)

Hearing the call to prayer lets us know that we have finally arrived in turkey. It is an evocative sound that we love (even though Turkish friends say that they have no idea what is being said)

You can search 'islamic call to prayer' or 'adhan' on the interweb. The adhan is always in Arabic and the vast majority of Turkish Muslims follow the Sunni branch. Here is one version I found:

Allahu Akbar
Allah is Great
(said four times)

Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah
I bear witness that there is no god except the One God (Allah).
(said two times)  Ashadu anna Muhammadan Rasool Allah
I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.
(said two times)

Hayya 'ala-s-Salah
Hurry to the prayer (Rise up for prayer)
(said two times)  Hayya 'ala-l-Falah
Hurry to success (Rise up for Salvation)
(said two times)

Allahu Akbar
Allah is Great
[said two times]

I agree that it is a very evocative sound and a reminder that we are not on the Costa del Lager.  I don't even really find the early call at all disturbing any more.  I should also apologise to any Muslim readers in case my reproduction of the text here is considered in any way offensive.  Once a diplomat.......

I know I have arrived (and am on my way to Kalkan), when eventually we turn right, along a small road a few kilometers from Dalaman airport and we see the green Mosque!  Makes me feel at home after the horrors of Gatwick!  Cannot wait to get back! :)   A few weeks and counting!

It's really strange that whenever we come back to Kalkan, on the first morning the call from the Mosque will wake us up.. but after that, it has the opposite effect... really soothing and restful. We both love the sound, and find it really comforting.

There is a regular part of the call which sounds just like "inkwell". I hear this word/phrase several times in each call. Does anyone know what the word(s) (presumably Arabic) really are/is?

I've often thought that too - I think it is a stylised 'akhbar' (great)!

Martyn - how often do you get home before the first call when you are in Kalkan?

Allen, because of the amphitheatre affect in Kalkan the call to prayer is pretty consistent in its noise level throughout the town. I love it too, and have to say it also serves as a perfect alarm clock...for lunch, then tea (which usually means wine o'clock) and then we know we're in trouble if we hear the last one and we're still having pre-dinner drinks in Moonlight :o :o  I rarely hear the early call, even when we're staying in town, as most places we've stayed seem to have really good double glazing!
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

Yes, I do believe you're right! I've been listening really carefully over the past 3 weeks we've been here. It  sometimes sounds more like "akhbar" than others, but with a bit of imagination (and logical deduction from the frequency with which the word occurs in the call), you can definitely interpret it as that.

Why not tell the Imam when you are coming and I'm sure they will shut it all down so as not to spoil you holiday, after all its only their country and religion.......

My goodness, Misty.. well said!! Tell you what... you poor peeps who had such a problem with Imran.... found lots of places for you.... Butins, Pwllheli, Centre Parcs, UK  or Blackpool, England... none have Imrans! ( consequently , they don't have the lovely Turkish people and their culture!)

The Imam is the cleric (head of the mosque) who leads the prayers.  The actual calling to prayer is carried out by the Muezzin which is not a clerical role.  The Muezzin is supposed to be chosen for his 'good voice' but that is not always obvious!  The Muezzin in the Kalkan mosque about 2 years ago did have a great voice, very melodic, but some of the more recent incumbents have not been quite so tuneful.
