Question re buying cigarettes at Dalaman Airport
« on: September 28, 2009, 07:19:35 PM »
I was put in an awkward position at work today, where someone has asked me to bring  200 cigarettes back when we return on 19th October. (we don't smoke, and the way it was worded, left me no room to say no)
Another colleague has told me only to buy them at the airport, to ensure they are legal etc.
My question is this:-
We are flying with Monarch.  Once we've checked in, and go through to Departures, if I buy them, will they have to fit into my hand-luggage, or can I board with them in a carrier bag?
We were coming back from Mallorca with RyanAir last year, and witnessed a VERY ugly scene at the gate, where a woman who had bought some duty-free, couldn't fit it into her hand luggage, as they demanded. There was an actual fight, and police were called!    :o
(I know RyanAir are particularly awkward, so it may be just them)
Any advice from you old hands?
Thanks in advance.

That's very cheeky, expecting you to bring them duty free back!  I would have pretended I'd already committed my duty free allowance to a friend, but that's just me  >:D

Yes - you buy them in Departures and then can take them on the plane in the carrier bag.  They don't have to go in your actual hand luggage. We bought 400 cigarettes and some other items from Dalaman this month (we also flew with Monarch) so had a piece of hand luggage each AND the carrier bag of Duty Free.

We once bought counterfeit cigarettes in Side but have never had a problem in Kalkan.  I've been told they are around though so it's definitely better to buy them in the airport.

A subject which will get people going - I can hear you all now - do not come into Gatwick on a late flight, as I did a few days ago.  Still had a few cigs from outbound UK

Kefgirl - I often take cigarettes back for people who choose to smoke.  That's up to them.  I've never had a problem carrying a duty-free carrier bag onto the plane or fitting one pack into my hand luggage.  However, you can also buy them in the duty free next to the baggage carousel on arrival at the same price as the duty free in departures.  So if you're worried about it why not buy them while you're waiting for your cases to come through and put them in your suitcase when you go home?  One 200 cig carton won't take up much space.  What always amazes me is the people who are taking multiple packs home and don't seem to be bothered by it!!

Thanks to all of you for very helpful replies. What a marvellous forum this is!    :)

I've only met this guy 2 or 3 times, we're both on a computer skills course in our IT dept at the hospital.
I just said, on leaving yesterday, that I'd be away for the next 3 Monday mornings, as I go on holiday on Monday. He leapt up and asked if I smoked, and if not, was I bringing any cigs back, so caught me unawares, so to speak. Jeez, I don't even know his surname! Got an empty packet of the favoured brand, and £40 thrust into my hand before I picked my bag up!!   :o
Anyway, don't mind doing anyone a favour, just didn't want a problem boarding!
Thanks again. xx

You won't have a problem if you buy them in duty free and carry them on the aircraft. The airlines are strict at check in about the one piece of hand luggage, after that you're ok. Cigarettes are cheaper at the duty free than buying them in resort. 18 Euro at the airport, 55TL in resort for Marlboro red for 200.
Nothing is really work unless you would rather be doing something else.

Thanks Brooksie,
He's given me £40 sterling. Will they take that in the Duty-Free shop?
