Solution for damp walls
« on: September 07, 2009, 08:57:11 AM »
I am getting damp penetration through my ground floor apartment's exterior walls so that the bottom of some of the interior walls errupt and have the plaster falling off.  I think this is because there isn't a damp proof course. Does anyone know of a solution please and it would be great if it didn't involve carrying heavy products out here from the UK.

If the wall is above ground then it can be sealed quite easily. Either by painting it with the waterproof mixture they seal pools etc with or by covering with bitumen style sheeting. The walls are then painted. Water penetration at the base of walls is often caused by minor cracks between the concrete foundations and the usually seismic brick walls. These are usually sealed by a small tile or travertine up stand. If the outside path is too high then a worse case scenario would be to lower the path or put drains in to divert any water from the walls. If it is a basement flat it can be more complicated. All products can be bought in Kalkan and any number of builders would do the work.

Thank you so much for your advice.  The bottom of the walls is at ground level so I guess this adds to my problems.  If you could recommend a firm of builders, I should be so grateful. I didn't know how to pm you but if necessary, if it's considered advertising, could you pm be back.  It's quite disheartening as every season I have the walls replastered and every winter the problem returns.

Thank you very much.  I received your PM but didn't manage to reply by PM.

I know the firm you mention and will ask them if they can help.

Your assistance has been very much appreciated.

Butterfly, there is currently a problem with sending Private Messages. If you look in the Announcement, Requests and Suggestions, under the Private messages thread, there is a "work round" that might help you, until the problem can be resolved.

Hi Butterfly
Be sure to know exactly where the damp is coming from, just because it manifests itself at the lower wall level, doesn't mean it is necessarily coming from there, it could be coming from anywhere and then it will find it's way down to the lowest level it can. Sealing the outer wall where the problem can be seen may just be sealing the problem in, which will worsen the problem as the wall where it needs to breathe will be unable to.
Cement render to buildings is one of the worst causes of damp penetration as the water can easily get between the render and the brickwork, the render cracks easily. allowing water penetration. a good example of this can be seen at the upper level walls to the side of tesco supermarket, have a look when you are next in ozadana or the fast food cafe at the building opposite.
I bet the internal faces to the ground floor wallls of that building are very damp
