Thank you Howmad. I felt someone should come on and defend that part of Misty''s initial post rather than focus on the football supporting "underclass". A few different threads have mentioned this idea that ex-pats make disparaging comments about tourists and it needed someone who lives there to post something to the contrary.
Martyn, for me humour can''t be applied when this sort snobbery is in full flow (spot on, Lougie) and I think the thread shows more evidence of tolerance by passes than anything else..!
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

I don''t think snobbery is the problem, as such. It''s more stereotyping and generalisation.

The trouble is, if your experience of people wearing football shirts has generally been negative, then it''s human nature to generalise about all people who wear them. I''''m not saying that''s right or fair (in the same way that racism isn''t right or fair) but it exists.

I am a football supporter myself (if you call following Gillingham FC being a football supporter, which is questionable) and I wear a Gillingham football shirt when I go to a match. However, I would never wear it any other time... I just think it looks naff. Does that make me a snob, or is it just a matter of taste? Other people probably think my pin stripe suits looks naff. Do I care either way? No.

If you don''t like my clothes, laugh at me behind my back! Why can''t we just laugh with each other at our insecurities instead of getting all uptight about it?

By the way, I don''''t really wear a pinstrip suit. Perish the thought!

I wear a uniform when i''m working, when i''m on hols i''m t shirt and shorts and am in Kalkan to chill,i''m not in a fashion parade...i add that i''m always freshly scrubbed and smell nice when i go out in the evening. I will dress in smarter shorts and shirt for a decent restaurant..peoples opinions of me are not of an importance to me. I am who i am...the local population of turks don''t seem to be bothered by things and it''s there country so the opinions of fellow travellers who don''t know me and pre judge cut little slack. My footy shirt will be coming with me for the 23 year this year(no..not the same one!! ;D) and i look forward to watching England next wednesday somewhere in kalkan!!

p.s congratulations to Martin on Gills promotion..you went up like my brummies did!! ;)
People Of Britain.. When your missus asks "Does my bum look big in this? Never say "Dunno your blocking the light."... just sayin ????

The person who dreamed up the word Chav has a lot to answer for...certain sectors of society deem everyone that doesn''t meet their standards one......the worst behaved people I have come across in Kalkan was a bunch of chinless wonders allowing their kids to run riot in Aubergines...

I''m a football supporter and never wear a shirt, but I would defend anyone''s right to wear their team''s colours anywhere, just as I would defend anyone wearing a horrible bri-nylon dayglo Hawaiian shirt if they''re nowhere near Hawaii....or a pin stripe suit if that''s your garment of choice  ;) If this thread was just about clothes, I''d be laughing with you...but we both know it''s not. Hence my, what you call, sense of humour by pass and metamorphosis into Audrey Forbes Hamilton  :)
Some of you seem to forget the Turkish love football and the town was awash with Turkey shirts last year for the Euros and much celebrating occurred around their games...but I guess this is allowed by the "no football shirts in Kalkan in case we turn into Marmaris" lobby group  :o

You''ll get told off you naughty little lizard  >:D >:D >:D

My policy on holiday is I wear what I like...except football shirts as I just don''t like the image...when I go out in the evening I dress as I deem appropriate for a meal in a restaurant.

Hi Lougie
Some of us are such snobs we try not to mix with ''the English'' even when in the UK - especially if they live near portsmouth ;)

So who made Kalkan so popular in the first place, the snobby boating fraternity or footie fans?

Just interested ;)
