Asfiya Hamam
« on: May 11, 2009, 02:14:27 PM »

Does anyone know the e-mail address of the Spa at the Asfiya Hotel I would like to book ahead as last time I just turned up and they could not take me till the following day. I like to have a Turkish bath on the first morning of my holiday as it makes you feel squeeky clean and improves the sun tan.

I just got a reply from them.  the bath is now £20 per person which seems a lot to me.

You can book on info@asfiyahotel.com.  My reply came from Deniz.

What''s really great about the hamam is all the rubbing down and massaging and stuff is done by men, men rub down the women and men rub down the men, so great you can leave your husband in capable hands with no worries and get the strong hand of a Turkish man to massage you at the same time, excellent!!

In a normal proper Turkish bath men never scrub the women, it''s always done by women, I have to say I had a Turkish bath in Istanbul & was scrubbed by a women & felt a lot more comfortable than at the Asfiya, where I was scrubbed by a man & didn''t enjoy it whatsover, sorry don''t want to put anyone off just giving another & different opinion.

I''m pretty sure that the woman who runs the Atlantis Wellbeing Hammam behind the Yali does the turkish bath too - so you could ask her to do it..!!  :D

Me - I''m quite happy with the men doing it....they dont get too "personal" (if you know what I mean  ;)) and what was funny was when I went with my husband and 14 year old son and 17 year old daughter - me and her got the MUCH older men (probably the better masseurs!!) and the 2 men got the young boys...very politically correct!!

Enjoy!

I''ve had Turkish Baths all over Turkey, sometimes men, sometimes women. The first one I had was 25 years ago in Kusadasi. I was on the beach and needed the loo, thought the building to the side was a toilet block, so wandered over. I went in and before you know it I was laying on a slab being pummelled and scrubbed by a huge Turkish man. I thought it might have been a beach tradition before you were allowed to go into the loo - only my third day in Turkey and it was a fairly new tourist destination for Brits is my defence ;D.
I don''k know how I held my wee in during the entire process - well I do..it was before childbirth destroyed my pelvic floor...too much information :o :o
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

I think you were unfortunate there Felicity, the guy I had rubbing me down was a real young hunk!
It''s strange because I''ve since found out that there is nothing ''traditional'' about this kind of hamaming,
traditionally men and women use the hamam on different set days of the week, men on Thursdays say and the women on Tuesdays      and they are not mixed, this is something laid on specially for the tourists,
lucky for us girls!

Most of the massage men iv''e seen have been portly little stout fellows wrapped in towels...they look like they eat a box of turkish delight between customers!!..the lady ones look like susan boyle..my turkish bath experiences are over ..it''s no fun being pulled and mangled ,having skin rubbed away, battered and then being drowned and then paying for it!! :o

The photos make it appear to be more like a sauna than a real Turkish hammam.  We went to the Regency which has a marble covered hammam and had the works for over 1,5 hours including tea in the ''rest area''. More expensive though, paid TL 100 last summer.

That sounds very pricey, definitely a tourist price I recently had the full works in Istanbul for 15TL.
