2012
« on: August 24, 2008, 05:30:58 PM »
Hi,
I have to admit I am a bit of an olympics addict and just love it when GB win a medal. It was great to see our athletes perform so well in Beijing. So, what does everyone think about London 2012. Personally I can''t wait but I am not sure we can match the Beijing opening and closing ceremony. How spectacular was that?

You''re right Loretta, it was spectacular.  I just hope "we" don''t do anything embarrassing - Hazel Irving mentioned 1500 Pearly Kings and Queens!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can''t wait and have already booked myself a couple of weeks off, although OH will assume it''s to go to Kalkan.  I don''t think so, lol

Congratulations to all our medal winners and all those who competed.  You were fantastic and thank you to Beijing for hosting such a spectacular event.

Hi, I agree this Olympics has been fantastic,  I have nothing but admiration for the achievements of all the athletes involved.  It has been a real tonic that over the last couple of weeks the news has been full of our success in Beijing and not the usual daily dose of credit crunch misery, falling house prices and teenage knife crime.

Moving on to 2012, there was an interesting article in the Sunday Times today that reported that however brilliantly organised the Beijing games were, that the atmosphere was lacking outside the stadium and that we should really be looking to how Sydney ran the games in 2004 as a benchmark for 2012.

London is a fantastic place, we Brits love to party and to participate in these sort of events, and I am sure we can offer something wonderful in 2012, maybe not on the same extravagant scale but equally good. I can''t wait.

In the olympics I find myself watching sports I never normally would, such as weightlifting, basket ball etc. I am a big fan of gymnastics (being an ex gymnast myself, I was inspired by Olga Korbut in 1972 to take up the sport, so that gives you an indication of how old I am!!!!) and it was fantastic to see Lewis Smith win a bronze medal on the pommel horse and Beth tweddle finish 4th on the A.bars final. The highlight for me though was Chris Hoy winning 3 golds in the cycling and Ussein Volt (sp) winning 3 golds for Jamaica in such style. Wonderful!

I loved Boris Johnson''s flag handover speech, where he talked about ping pong being invented on the dining tables of England... ''when the French see a dining table they think of dinner, When the English see a dining table we think of ping pong'' the man''s a real tonic, brilliant

Not much chance of that happening Blue Lizard, just not PC enough. It''s all about ''cultural diversity'' these days - hence the rather strange mixed bag of dancers prancing round the double decker bus at the closing ceremony in Beijing. Unless Boris puts his foot down, expect more of the same in 2012.
