Beats me why any female wants brown boobies anyway? Where are you going to show them?
Do these dim wits really want skin cancer??
When I see these people wandering about the streets semi clad I so want to go up to them and say something but I know what their answer would be. :-X

I think it depends how old you are. I think diignity comes with age
It''s fine for young people, but for us wrinklies over 30 I think there should be some restraint
As for not in Turkey. can''t see there''s anything special about Turkey, if they do want to catch up with the modern world then this is a part of it.

And what about respect for other cultures, what does that come with?

It has nothing to do with age, and everything to do with respecting other people and your own dignity.
I don''t see anyone wandering topless down my local high street or in the local park, so why is it considered ''catching up with the modern world''?

When we were staying at the Samira hotel in July it seemed there was a lemming/sheep effect! There was one girl who was topless on the second week and from then on others joined in!
I have to admit that when staying in the likes of Kavos I have gone topless, but would never do so in Turkey because I wouldn''t want to offend - or draw attention to myself!

I wonder where your local high street is mrs. B, probably not Newcastle.
In the hot summer men in England walk the streets topless and take their shirts off when they''re labouring, anyway you don''t see women walking topless in the streets of Kalkan, nor any other streets.  it''s a sea and sun thing women and toplessness, a beach and pool thing. I don''t make the rules it''s just the way things are. Anyway there are plenty of Turkish women who like to sunbathe topless, where do people get these ideas that Turkey doesn''t have liberal views, or doesn''t accept foreign ways their society is as open and accepting as ours in the U,K.  If they were offended by it they would surely stop it.
This is nothing to do with culture but more about the vanity of the Brits

Actually hel66 I think it is you that has not caught up with the modern world. According to the Daily Mail today (so it must be true) topless sunbathing is now considered completely naff and even in St Tropez (where the whole thing started) no one go''s topless anymore.

I think that views in Kalkan are possibly not representative of Turkey as a whole.

Just have a look here at the prosecution of Orhan Pamuk as an example that Turkey is not as liberal as UK.

I am sure other people can also give many other examples.

Eniste, do you know that there are thousands of Russians in the Antalya area, especially Adana?  Also Kemer, Marmaris & Bodrum, but most who live in Turkey are in the Adana area.  Inevitably they will trickle down the coast.  In fact, one who sells viagra on the Internet reportedly bought a villa here this year.

hel66 -- please introduce me to any Turkish woman, other than those on the covers of newspapers, who goes topless on the beach, in a boat, or in a private pool.  I know several Turkish women, all educated in European schools, all from Istanbul, all having spent time living abroad, all modern and liberal, but none of them fit your statement. But my sample is limited.  I would like to expand my acquaintances and be introduced to some of these ''''modern'''' women you know.

I know.  Regular trips to Antalya show that we have so far got off lightly, Russian-wise.  It can only be a matter of time until Kalkan is annexed, South Ossetia-like

I disagree that it''s a case of Turkey "wanting to catch up with the modern world then this is a part of it."
We are still guests in Turkey and should respect that culture however you perceive it.
Turkey has a culture more restrained than others and we should respect that.
When Western women are seen parading around the streets in bikini tops, and seen sunbathing topless it adds to the perception that Western women are ''easy'' which because of our Independence there is a preponderance towards anyway.

It''s not appropriate. This is a moslem country. When you see Turkish women going topless, then you can. What Russians do in Antalya or or Alanya is neither here nor there.

There are still several countries in this world, not Muslim, & one from where I have just returned, where nudity, topless sunbathing together with men walking around with bare chests, in public &/or the working place is an arrestable offence, its not a matter of religion, its a matter of respect for their fellow countrymen/women & others, its their law.

Unfortunately here in the UK and other countries the meaning of the word respect has been pushed to one side, selfishness, amongst others has taken over and being inflicted upon others. The  ''''we are here & we will behave as we wish''''  attitude is all too common.

What''''s always quite amazing is that the ones with the above attitude nearly always moan about others when back in their own domains.

Im just sorry for mentality that thinks toplessness is a part of modernity .. Why dont you walk naked in the streets ? its more modern i think .. Did you ever hear something like morals ? Or its better if you have daughter you both can walk naked in the streets .. Really modern wow .. Do you know what they do in Saudi Arabia if you try this ? This country has about 70 million population and its not fair to judge it by seeing people never go out from their village or city or people come from east of Turkey .. I think people whom they think modern themselves have to improve their topless brains ..  Thank you

Last month women were arrested in California, New Jersey and Nevada - probably other states too - for public toplessness.  In many states it is an arrestable offence.
