Dancing in the street
« on: July 29, 2014, 09:34:43 AM »
I was sitting dreamily on the Ivy roof terrace above Cafe del Mar at midnight last night, nursing an ice cold Lal, and thinking how I had never seen Kalkan so busy. It was like a Hollywood film set. The previous evening there was hardly a table to be had in any of the restaurants. The noise and heat rose up from the packed streets like a fug. I was listening to Frank Sinatra musak from the speaker behind me, a bit of Motown from the Fountain Bar across the street, the 'boom boom' from Mojitos on the other side of town, and the loud music from the moonlight party boats as they returned to the harbour. Then suddenly, from the street below, the unmistakable sound of a live band struck up. Two buskers playing guitar and drums, and carrying a speaker on their back, launched into a very energetic rendition of 'Johnny B Good'. An appreciative crowd gathered around them outside the opticians and before you knew it  people were dancing in the street. One couple really went for it with a full jive outside La Terrazza. Nearby diners were hanging over balconies and roof terraces, applauding and cheering while shops emptied as people ran outside to see what all the commotion was about. After a few numbers the buskers moved on to the next street to entertain and delight more revellers. It was spontaneous, spirited, and I liked it. Much more so than the pointless, inane din from the nightclubs. Has anyone else seen these guys?
