Hi Brian,  One major problem for those of us in Kalkan who love maps and mountains is that there is no equivalent of Ordnance Survey maps in Turkey.  However there is now good GPS based software that enables you to map any route you walk complete with the topography.

Earlier this week the Tuesday walking group walked in the hills behind the main Kalkan mountains.  The max height we reached was just under 3,800 feet.  My guess is that the hills that you see from the town are between 3,000 and 3,500 feet.

Going further inland the mountains keep rising until you reach the highest peak Ak Dag close to Gombe on the road to Elmali.  This peak is over 3,000 metres high or around 10,000 feet.

By the way, the walks that we do are written up in my blog at http://walkbustrainboatplanecar.wordpress.com/

Hope that helps.

Alan

Using various questions on Google, etc, I have found this on the www.mta.gov.tr website (please tell me what they do!)

http://www.mta.gov.tr/v2.0/haritalar/fiziki_haritalar/fiz1a.jpg

Close examination would suggest that it's 1956m.  That's 6417 feet, which sounds a bit too much!

But then as I don't know what the map shows, it might be the distance from somewhere!
Please use "Click to Say Thanks' if you enjoy this Post.  ::)

Cheers Chris S, great detective work I agree the 1956m  is probably the highest point on the way to Fethia,  I have seen snow on these peaks  in April. I thought the tops of the mountains behind Kalkan  might be in region of between 1000 -1500m . I am on a mission now to find out, I know there are walks arranged sometimes up to the summits,  maybe someone who has done the walk or intending to do in the future might be able to find out via a GPS on their  phone, I believe many phones that have gps can give feet above sea level readings,  that said maybe you have to run a special app with the GPS to find out

If you go to the peaks around Elmali they are >2200m (approx 100Km NW of Kalkan) and no I'm not going to climb them to check....
I have a very responsible position...
When anything goes wrong I’m responsible!!

It was there in September - and no, I didn't go up to check!  And there weren't two flags after a few Efes, either  ;D

I remember seeing a map with the hight marked as 992m, so clashgours guess was pretty accurate.

A couple of years ago my wife's brother did the "walk" from our villa up to the turkish flag in about two hours. Parts invovled a bit of scrambling and lots of brambles around so shorts not a good idea.

The flag above Kalkan is at 700m.
The 'heights' above Bezirgan are about 1100m.
Fire/Smoke mountain is 1950m.

Brian,

Today I called in to see Cemal at Desti just below the Moonlight Bar to talk about maps and he showed me two recent topographical maps of the region between Fethiye and Antalya - minus the areas where there are sensitive establishments.

They are on a scale of 1:75,000 and show contour lines and spot heights.  They are the most detailed maps I have seen anywhere in Turkey.

Adding to Mark's information, the highest point directly above Kalkan is Kerevet Tepe at 923 metres and the summit with the masts to its east stands at 1091 metres.

All fascinating stuff for us cartophiles.

Hi Chris_s,

MTA seems to be a government agency responsible for mineral exploration in Turkey.  If you go to www.mta.gov.tr home page there is a tab for "English" where all is explained.

Those are great maps that you found.  Seems that the Turkish government is becoming less sensitive to the publication of detailed maps.  Good news.

There is an app for iphone called simple altitude, free I believe. This measured the highest point on the mountain above Islamlar
at 1040 metres.

Further to all this, while I was looking at Weather Undergrund, I found that they give contours on their maps when you select the 'Terrain' option.

This Link (http://wxug.us/19eap) may be useful.

Don't know where the data comes from, but it's interesting...

Chris,  what a great find, pretty much confirms taken together with   the other info, looking up from Kalkan harbour , to the left up to 800 mtr,  to the right up to 1000mtr. I took a few  photos from a boat about  1km out from the harbour, and clearly a big difference as you scan the horizon  in terms of peaks visible overlooking Kalkan, the photos I took put me on a mission to find out, thanks for your detective work and all the other posts  from all
