New building in Kalkan
« on: May 29, 2013, 07:52:34 AM »
Hi, can anyone advise if the new builds in Kalkan are slowing? I am interested that the town does not get over developed and has some measure in place preventing this?
Thanks.

Methinks that you are perhaps a little late!
Building has slowed over the past two winters because of the recession and the price of land, those are the principle factors in controlling further development.

Sounds like its not going to go too well. Think I will give it a wide swerve, thanks.

a great source of info is KTLN, and if you google 'Kalkan Belediye Board meeting' you will find KTLN reports of most of the Belediye meetings, these include planning issues , stats on new Property registrations etc.

Kalkan could hardly be described as a Metropolis and I doubt it ever will be, within my lifetime at any rate. True there has been development but by and large in a reasonably controlled way and there is still plenty of greenery around. Like any area of the Mediterranean which is considered to be desirable it will always attract people (such as us) who want a bit of 'paradise'. It would be sad if you gave it a "wide swerve" because of a couple of opinions;  in our albeit, somewhat limited experience of Turkey I believe you would be hard pressed to find better, but good luck in your quest.
Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.

Thanks headroom, that was exactly the info I was trying to get to. I have never been to Kalkan, but holidayed along that coast many times. I realise that I am late to the party if/when buying a property there, but I am trying to guage most angles prior to a visit. Thanks again.

I don't necessarily think you are "late to the party", yes as I said there has been development but there is still plenty of room for new 'guests' I still quite honestly believe Kalkan has a lot to offer and compared to what I have seen of the Turkish Med. coast there is nowhere that competes as far as ambience and dare I say it 'class' we are in the process of marketing our place but only with a view to downsize to something smaller to which we can retire in our dotage, ideally within the Kalkan area.

I feel sure that if you took a look at Kalkan you would appreciate it, happy hunting!

Why not try a touring holiday along the whole coastal area, including Kalkan looking at where you like. We did this from Malaga to Barcelona in early 2003 and the result was that we didn't want to buy anywhere along that route (too much building going on and we called it 'crane land) apart from 2 places we might consider but as they were beyond our budget unless we wanted a very small place with no pool we put it on hold.

We now have an apartment in Kalkan and have never regretted it. It's not perfect but where is. It is much developed since we bought in 2004 but it still has a wonderful charm. The number of repeat visitors to Kalkan (who are well travelled and don't normaly return to places they have visited) says a lot about the place.
To dismiss it without a visit would be rash, it may not be for you but you won't know until you visit.
