This morning there was an underwater earthquake just off the island of Rhodes but it was felt in Fethiye.  Here is a good article on earthquake preparedness.

The most important of all these things is having a plan and not waiting to put it into action.

This earthquake was also felt in Kalkan. For those of you here at the moment - THAT is what woke you about 6:25 this morning. The shaking lasted for about 15-20 seconds.

I am starting to think this is a dangerous place to go - Tornados, earthquakes, mountain Lions, fires, floods - Or Is it just a ploy to try and keep the number of visitors down  ;D

I heard it too but didnt realise what it was. A lot of dogs were barking and I noticed the water in a glass on my bedside table rippling.

We should apparently be expecting an earthquake Richter scale 7.

Why do we need earthquake insurance then? ???
Currently have a duplex apartment in Kiziltas which we visit as often as we can.

John when you say you top up your earthquake insurance via your household insurance is that buildings cover or a separate earthquake cover? Thanks everyone for keeping us updated.

There is no such thing as an earthquake proof building.
Some buildings are better designed than others, as such they can withstand an earthquake better. Good design simply means you will probably get out alive or with minor injuries.
As Cosetta says be prepared and have a plan.
What has always concerned me about Kalkan, is the height and size of some of the retaining walls built around properties. These are certainly not earthquake proof, the heigher they are the more they will magnify a tremor. I''ve seen some so badly built that they fell over before they were finished!!

Hi
During an earthquake the frame of a (more modern) home is usually designed to move slightly with the tremors. However the wall and glass infills, while often providing vital support for the frame, do not move, but often stay rigid.
This shows itself in cracked brickwork and broken glass. Under extreme force the masonry will collapse and the glass can become shrapnel.
You should find a safe place during earthquakes. Inside the home it could be under a sturdy table  beside an interior wall away from windows or tall furniture that could fall on you. Outside the home, move away from buildings, lampposts and power lines asap.
I agree with Mr Fed that you should consider taking separate insurance to the DASK.
Being prepared for an earthquake, that may never happen, will save injury or lives.

Such earthquakes generally cause cracks in the buildings but do not lead to destruction if the buildings are constructed in compliance with engineering rules, he said. “But we should not forget that the region we live in might produce earthquakes with a magnitude of 6 or 6.5 at any time. So, what should be done is to make buildings earthquake-safe with correct engineering service,” he added.

Hi hel66
Words are cheap...lets hope no one ever has to test any home in Kalkan (or anywhere else) for its ability to remain standing in an earthquake.
Anyone who knows anything about earthquakes knows earthquakes do not kill people...buildings do.

Turkey, Greece and Italy are carying out joint research into the effects of tsunamis as well as earthquakes in the Adriatic, Aegean & Med. Does DASK cover tsunamis?
