Fresh/dried herbs?
« on: July 18, 2012, 01:17:46 PM »
Hi All, I know that I always find lots of delicious and aromatic spices in Kalkan but I've never looked for herbs (preferably fresh) before.
Does anyone know where or if I will find for example; Tarragon, basil, thyme, mint, rosemary and coriander, or should I just bring dried from home?
Many thanks  :)

Hi - Fresh herbs normally available at the Yali supermarket (just at the entrance) - or the market on a Thursday, or -
little veg/fruit shop in Akbel  (at the top of the village) x

Your welcome - I have always found fresh herbs to be in plentiful supply, and the various tastes are delicious, totally different to what we have here, or have I got my Kalkan hat on?!! x

Mmm I'm looking forward to trying them. I always use a variety of hebs in my cooking at home and  I have the best intentions to cook some tasty meals this year in kalkan, but we will see how long the enthusiasm lasts.  ;D

The most we ever manage is various nice easy to prepare lunch dishes, and the occasional bbq - mostly to ease my conscience as to how much we are eating out - I am sure you will enjoy both! Have a great time.

They have great fresh herbs at the market but I always buy a supply of dried oregano to bring back - it's much fresher than you get oer here and has a wonderful taste. You can usually get parsley coriander mint basil and thyme - they also have a supply in the veg shop opposite the fish man behind the taxi rank. NOT LONG NOW Lizilu.   ;D ;D ;D :) ;)

Got Rosemary, Dill and Flat Leaf Parsley from the greengrocer across the road from Hunkar earlier this week. Was able to use the Rosemary in the Lamb and Chicken for the BBQ and mixed the dill with yoghurt for the delicious dip which accompanies lots of dishes :D

We've always bought fresh herbs in the market on Thursday or at the greengrocer's itstime mentions.
We've tried, unsuccessfully for many years to buy fresh corriander so might be an idea to bring that with you in the dried form if its essential to any of your recipes.
I'm a bit giddy for you Lizilu...soon you will be in Kalkan ;D
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)
