Buying fresh food.
« on: September 05, 2012, 04:31:52 PM »
Hello,
I am going to Kalkan next week with some friends and I've heard that Turkish supermarkets can be overpriced because they are mainly used by tourists?
But I think that there is only a market in Kalkan on Thursdays?
I was wondering if anyone can recommend whether we should only buy certain things from supermarkets and wait for the market for cheap produce?
Or if there is anywhere we can get food cheaply for home cooking.
Thanks very much (:

The supermarkets aren't particularly expensive except for imported produce - and they're used by locals too. The market's great for fresh fruit & veg - today I picked up a bag of tomatoes, two nectarines the size of beach balls, some baby cucumbers, an iceberg lettuce, some basil, a huge bunch of gorgeous rocket and some limes for 9.50TL - or circa £3.50. The green grocer in Kalkan is good value too so don't stress about prices.

For every one tourist in a Turkish supermarket you will find fifty Turks and non Turkish residents. We all shop in the local supermarkets .  We sometimes shop in the market but find that  we pay more or less the same price for our fruit and veg there as we do in the greengrocer, so the market is not really any cheaper.

Kalkan has two very good green. Grocers ,two good butchers and nearly a dozen grocery stores/ supermarkets.

Our weekly food bill here is  more than 50% cheaper than  our weekly food bill was in the UK five years ago and we eat far better here with wonderful, locally produced food which tastes amazing.
