Are long threads a problem.....?
« on: May 07, 2012, 11:52:18 AM »
Just seeking opinions, really, as recently, when I was doing my daily blog on holiday on Trip Advisor, one poster, although very positive about the thread, did comment that long threads were a problem with his iPhone, as he had to scroll through all the contributions, say, to get to page ten, to see the latest post? I don't have one of these phones and was wondering if it really is a problem for readers?

The reason I write in series, is purely selfish, as on a long and grey winters day, it's quite nice to reflect through the whole holiday in one go, rather than looking for another installment further up the list of posts.

What do you think?

I like long threads for the very same reason, Antler. I don't access the internet on my smart phone because I'm not smart enough :)
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

I often view this forum on my iPhone (am writing this post on there now),
I do not have a problem with long threads, in fact I quite enjoy reading through long ones, especially in the holiday reports section  :) I don't often read the trip advisor forums so can't really comment on that as their navigation may be different/less efficient on iPhone.

Haha, true that is one downside! Autocorrect does come out with some funny suggestions, must remember to check before I post :D

Long threads are both useful and counter productive.

One one hand they give an enormous wealth of comment and opinion, sometimes even amusing...!  On the other hand they tend to get off the point and wander into side issues.

As an example, I contribute to forums on LinkedIn, and one of these has now exceeded 1000 posts, and it's still going!  Obviously an emotive point for that thread, but that's exactly the point - a good subject will run and run.  Even without the aid of a Pub and some beer...

As for access on smartphones, the solution is really quite clear: the most recent post should be the first one you see, the oldest on the last page; thus when you go to the topic you have been following, the new ones are first.  Other forums do this (but not all!)

Just needs the Forum admin the change the setup.

Maybe Alexandr the Meerkat would have a word for this?

17 weeks and a bit and counting.....

On the mobile version of tripadvisor there is an option to sort posts by Oldest or Newest, which I find useful when following a long thread.
I have a very responsible position...
When anything goes wrong I’m responsible!!
