Water Problems Again
« on: April 19, 2012, 07:44:01 AM »
Once again there seem to be problems with the water supply, the installation of the new pumps following the major disruption last June should have solved the problem but obviously it has not. The holiday season is just beginning and already the water has been off for a total
of five days out of the last eight.
As a result of the problems last year there are certainly tourists who will not be returning to Kalkan because the holiday was spoilt by the lack of water. Surely those responsible for the supply of water must realise the impact the disruption of supply has, not only the residents of Kalkan, but also on tourism on which the economy of Kalkan is based.
This year is probably going to be a difficult year due to the low levels of economic growth in both the UK and Europe plus the impact of the Olympic Games, therefore it is surely sensible to get the problems with the water supply sorted out before it deters any more tourists from visiting Kalkan.

You may have already seen that the Belediye have put back water system maintenence back to the winter as they do not have time now, before the season

But. given last years problems it seems an odd decision as they have had all winter, when it would not , as you say have impacted on tourism

Perhaps we all view these things diffently ?

last year we had no water for 9 out of 14 days in june(partly due to poor management and filling reserve  tanks.... he had key so i couldn't organise it myself!) but mainly because of the water supply being off...however we decided that it couldn't be as bad again (could it?)  but after what will be our 25th year visiting Kalkan we won't be going back if we have the same this year... :'( :'(

Yes Kevincat, they do seem to think differently here, clearly extending the harbour wall was a much greater priority than ensuring a guaranteed supply of water. Obviously there are going to be significantly more yachts calling at Kalkan now that there is more space. Perhaps these extra visitors with offset the number of tourists who have chosen not to return because their holiday was spoilt last year because of the lack of water.

It is very worrying and doesn't bode well for the season.  When the demand for water inceases with the influx of holidaymakers I forsee more burst pipes that can't cope with the pressure - oh dear  :'(

You've got me worried. I hadn't noticed this on the forum previously and we didn't have any problems last year on our first visit, but that was in October. We're going in August this year, in a villa attached to a hotel. Wondering now if we've made the wrong choice....  we couldn't live without a water supply...2 teenage daughters...aaarrgh

Hi Tilly

I wouldn't worry usually there aren't any issues during the holiday season. Also if your staying in a villa attached to a hotel I'm sure they will have sufficient water tanks.

having lived here for 7 years now, i have to say that ,yes if you are in a hotel that provides you with water if there is a problem then thats ok, if not then be ready for no water throughout the season! it hasn't improved at all! the problem is as bad as it has always been, and yes i have a reserve tank but hey! thats another story.!!! If the water is off for 5 days in the burning heat it's tough! don't dress it up, tell the truth. NO WATER IS NO FUN.

Sounds as though I was right in assuming that the problems would get worse as the season gets under way and the demand for water increases.  I can't understand why they didn't so something about it during the winter?  I really sympathise with those that don't or can't have a back up tank. :'(

I have just read a reprt on KTLN about the foreigners meeting in Kas..the water issue came up and it seems an extra pump has been added at Saklikent which is why parts of Kalkan are water free...they say it should be back tonight or tomorrow morning...........................................how long for though.... mmmm??? ::)

It's great if they're adding a new pump but the pipes are so old they can't deal with the increase in water pressure and keep bursting!
