Indian Curry Ingredients
« on: March 13, 2011, 02:46:09 PM »
Can anyone confirm if the Yali supermarket or any of the others stock Patak's indian pastes - in particular the Tandoori and Tikka Masala varieties?

From memory they were stocking them last year - expensive to buy but less hassle than bringing them over.

Don't know. But with all the fresh ingredients available plus the many spices available, why not just take a recipe out with you? It will taste so much better.
Anyone got any tried and tested recipes they would like to share?

I am aware of the many different spices available at the market and elsewhere however some of the authentic indian spices quoted in indian recipes can be difficult to obtain.  I also prefer to spend time in the sun when in Kalkan and not in the kitchen.

Anyone care to answer the question as opposed to drift off topic?

Hi, here's a straight answer:

Yes the Yali do sell curry pastes, I'm not sure which types, but I think they have Tikka Masala. They also also sell poppadoms, coconut milk, and things like mango chutney. Yep they are more expensive than in England, but like you- I don't always want to be in the kitchen! Nothing wrong with wanting a curry once in a while- don't think it matters where you live in the world, it's nice to eat what you want! Only yesterday I bought my poppadoms from the Yali! ;D

One of the spice stalls in the Thursday market made up an amazing mix of spices that makes the best curry ever...we are almost out of it now and can't wait to get some more. We were buying some saffron and he asked us if we liked curry and just threw a load of different spices into a bag - we mix it with a bit of stock and a tin of chopped toms and the currys are incredible and authentic.
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

Many thanks Mitch for your information and to kalkan4eva on the indian spice mix at the market.  Will try that in 3 weeks time.

Even more convenient for us than Yali.  Thanks for the information.
