First time in Kalkan
« on: June 07, 2010, 10:58:22 AM »
We'll be visiting Kalkan for the first time at the beginning of July.  Could you tell me please if there is a local market for fresh fruit and veg and if so, when and where is it?

Thursday is market day - by the Mosque- just ask anyone to point you in the right direction when you are there.

Have fun.

There are also a couple of great fruit and veg shops with fresh deliveries daily.

There is a daily fish market down the steps by the taxi rank....but its worth a trip to Fethiye to the fish market there if you get a chance.
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

On the subject of the thursday market does anybody know what time it starts and finishes?

Thinking ahead and my mums birthday is on our first thursday, wanted to do something special like a boat trip so not sure we'll fit the market in, which is a real shame as we are self catering!

We usually get there for around 9.30-10 and they are still setting up some of the stalls, but all the fresh produce is well in place by then. I've no idea what time they start packing up thought as we've never been up in the afternoon. Depending on where you are staying if its only food you want you might be able to get up to the markets and down to the harbour by 10.30 if you pre-book a boat. You could always stop at the Nur Pattiserie and buy Mum one of those gorgeous gooey cakes - I've seen birthday candles in Yali supermarket if you don't pack your own - to take on the trip with you

It is open very early, stalls start opening up before 6:00am.

Ideal if you want to stop and get something for your breakfast on the way home, after the Moonlight bar closes.

What excellent suggestions!!
Brownie points are in the bag with the Nur cake suggestion, thanks kalkan4eva.  ;D
alanj, I've (so far) never been home in the daylight in Kalkan, although I did 'back in the day' in the likes of Kavos, Malia & Laganas  >:D
We're staying right opposite the market entrance so should be fine if we get up early enough - thanks!
