Change to Nationwide Cards
« on: March 21, 2010, 09:17:32 AM »
Not sure if people heard the article on Radio4 Moneybox yesterday, but Nationwide have changed the rules with their cards....

Nationwide used to sit firmly in the number one position of the best buy tables for the use of its cards for foreign transactions.

For precisely that reason, many people took out accounts with the mutual society.

However, it is now replacing the Flexaccount Cash card and replacing it with the Cash Card Plus - which will no longer allow you to withdraw money from ATMs when abroad.

Hi Jon. I've just listened to the Moneybox programme on i-player and my understanding is that if you have a Nationwide Flex Account then there is no change and account holders can continue to withdraw cash from foreign ATM's in the EU and Turkey without charge. The changes will affect those with the basic Nationwide bank account called Cash Card Account. They are changing the name to Cash Card Plus and customers will not be able to use them for free withdrawals abroad.

Interesting - as an account holder of a NW Flex Account of some length, I have not been informed of any changes regarding my account/card & using abroad.

Just to note: The NW Flex account is not been free since summer of 2009. There are no actual charges for cash withdrawel as such although there is a 1% levy on all cash ATM withdrawels. This is still the best card as most will charge £1.50 - £2.50 per withdrawel plus up to 2.75%. Please see the link for full explanation and scroll down to debit cards section:

People using a flex card in Turkey are not charged see following link.  :)  I seem to remember posting this same link last year when a similar question was raised.

Tonik is correct..Turkey is a "No Charge" area for Nationwide flex account card holders using ATMs...as long as they are drawing funds they have in there account...we used these cards for the last few years including 2009 on several occasions and no charges were applied..friends just back are the same....(it saves carrying large amounts of cash around or leaving it in your accommodation) ;)

We've just changed to the Santander Zero account and its also free to withdraw from ATM's abroad with their card - no matter where you are in the world!
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)
