KAPSA HITS THE HEADLINES
« on: August 31, 2009, 09:56:58 PM »
On August 18th 2009 the national newspaper Hurriyet published an article about Kapsa in its Akdeniz section. The text (translated into English)read:

A SPECIAL ASSOCIATION IN KALKAN

The street animals of Kalkan occupy a special place in the pretty little touristic town affiliated to KaÅŸ.  There, it seems, the street cats and dogs have already entered the EU. Kalkan Association for the Protection of Street Animals (KAPSA) collects money for street animals from locals and tourists visiting the town through well placed “collection boxes”.
The presence of both foreign and Turkish members on KAPSA’s management committee, its defence of animal rights, its care for the street animal's welfare and its policy of ID tagging and neutering dogs before releasing them back on the streets all show that Kalkan has already entered the EU in principle.
KAPSA, which was established as an association on April 4th 2008, has 62 members of which 25 are from various European countries (now mainly resident in Kalkan) the remainder are all Turkish. At the General assembly 3 Turkish and 4 foreign members were elected to form the management committee including Atilla Atalay who was elected president of the association. All  have been working hard to improve the living conditions of the street animals of Kalkan.

Unfortunately though, despite this positive publicity  Kapsa will struggle to reach its goals this year due to lack of funds. This winter we were really hoping to stem the flow of dogs being brought into Kalkan from the surrounding areas by taking our neutering program out to the villages. If we cannot teach people by example the importance of neutering dogs we will never be able to reduce the number of dogs here in Kalkan.
Secondly, we will be hard pushed to feed the animals that are already here this winter.

We appreciate that there is an economic recession but just £20 can neuter a cat or dog or £25 can feed 10 cats for a month! So it doesn't take a lot to make a difference. please help if you can.
