WHAT IS KAPSA
« on: February 29, 2012, 08:13:00 PM »
KAPSA stands for ‘Kalkan Association for the Protection of Street Animals’ Animals (‘Kalkan Sokak hayvanlarını koruma Derneği’ in Turkish)

KAPSA
was set up as an official organisation in April 2008 to improve the well-being of Kalkan’s street animals

Kapsa is a multi-cultural group of volunteers who care about the health and well being of Kalkan’s street animals and wish to promote informed and compassionate action to improve the living conditions of all Kalkan’s animals.
At the moment Kapsa has 63 full members, 38 of which are Turkish and the others are Europeans resident in Turkey. Kapsa also has 36 honorary members. (Full membership requires that a person is either Turkish or has residency in Turkey) We also receive a lot of help and support from many non-members and volunteers.

Kapsa aims and objectives

• To improve understanding and treatment of animals through public education, example and advocacy and to increase local awareness of, and compassion for the plight of street animals, both cats and dogs.
•To prevent the birth of unwanted animals by neuter and return
• To reduce the number of unwanted animals being brought into Kalkan from outside by extending our work to surrounding villages
• To provide appropriate veterinary care for sick and injured street animals
• To reduce the number of sick and starving animals by implementing a winter feeding program
• To find suitable homes for animals wherever possible
• To show people the importance of having owned animals neutered
• To keep dangerous dogs off the streets of Kalkan
• To set up and maintain a registry of ALL dogs in Kalkan (Owned or otherwise)

Brief history and achievements:

Kapsa was set up as an official charity in Turkey in 2008 in order to improve the welfare and living conditions of the street animals in Kalkan. Before this though a number of local and expat residents had been neutering, treating and feeding street animals on a smaller scale since 1994.
Since its foundation in 2008 Kapsa has:
•   Neutered over 900 cats and dogs,
•   Organised the winter feeding of over a thousand animals by around 70 volunteers (In the summer the animals are fed well by tourists, restaurants, visitors and locals, but in the winter when most of the businesses close and there are no tourists  the food supplies dry up)
•   Found homes for many street animals especially abandoned puppies and kittens.
•   Treated hundreds of victims of illness and accident and sometimes sadly even human abuse.
•   Regularly visited schools in the area to teach children about understanding and treatment of animals, the importance of neutering and animal husbandry in general.
•   Visited villages around Kalkan with a team of vets in order to trap and neuter animals there (owned and stray)– this also provides an excellent opportunity to educate concerning responsible ownership, neutering and treatment of animals
•   Developed good relations with other similar groups within Turkey
•   Received much support from tourists, local businesses and individuals
•   Kept supporters and interested parties updated through social networks such as facebook
