Favourite Kalkan typo
« on: August 03, 2009, 02:39:11 PM »
I was just asked to help a friend with the English in a document he was preparing and got to thinking about some of the interesting bits of Turnglish I had seen since being here.

I think that any attempt to speak or write in a strange language is admirable, but without making fun of such attempts, have any of you seen a sign or poster in Turkey that made you giggle?  My second favourite was on an estate agent's website, selling a villa with '4 bad rooms'.  Still the best for me can be found at the KaÅŸ road entrance to the Kelebek hotel, which advises drivers to drive carefully near their 'bland corner'!

Feel free to think of some, not necessarily in Kalkan or Turkey!

The best one I saw was in Kalymnos where a restaurant's board announced
"Food for all Testes"
And I thought the way to a man's heart was through his stomach.  ;D

I offer a farto service too  - and it's not usually necessary to wait for an hour.   ;) ;D

We English (I know I'm one) make some major mistakes with the language when we are trying to speak Turkish. Can we hear some from the Turkish speakers among us about our cock ups.
Nothing is really work unless you would rather be doing something else.

Not so much a verbal cock up...but i remember years ago while staying at the serra an elderly couple going off in the hire car for a day out...they came to a village in the middle of nowhere, feeling hungry they went into a restaurant(very busy)after a while waiting for the waiter they decided to help themselves from the buffet, after a while they realised they were in a funeral party and promptly left leaving some money on the table ...i'm afraid beer came out of my nose when they told me ;D ;D

A girl I knew decided that when going around Marmaris she would stop the hassle and say she wasn't a tourist (Ben turist deÄŸilim) but infact what she was saying was I am a mad tourist (Ben turist delim)

The idea of ice cream in half a melon sounds very tempting but this particular dessert was described as "ice cream - half in the melon".  Not sure where the other half went!

I carefully taught my husband the Turkish for "I'm retired": "emekliyim". To no avail: the first time, it came out as "ekmekliyim". His excuse: that he spends his time loafing around.........!!!
