Food shop
« on: June 21, 2009, 08:52:48 AM »
Hi Kalkan lovers,

Thanks for all the information you have provided, however can anyone help me by giving me some names of a few groceries, Just in case they don''t make any sense in Turkish to me he he, eg semi skimmed milk, fresh orange juice, butter, cordial juice (no fizz) and any other important information you can give regarding a food shop.

Thanks again Tracy x

I''ve never seen cordial in bottle but you can get all different flavours in powdered form in sachets.  We always take a couple of bottles of cordial wrapped in bin bags in our suitcases.
Currently have a duplex apartment in Kiziltas which we visit as often as we can.

You wont find fresh semi skimmed milk - but long life milk.  Sut is the word for milk and I think that semi skimmed is in blue cartons (pink is skimmed) but most of the makes say 0% or 50% indicating skimmed or semi skimmed!

Butter is tereyagi and orange juice is portakal suyu. Su - water, Ekmek is milk, Elma - apple, tavuk - chicken, et - meat, vegetables - sebze - however you will  find english speaking people in all the supermarkets so you wont have a problem!  hope that helps!

Enjoy!

Well not long left now, going on the 6Th July, what would be the best supermarket to go to, to get our first
big shop and the cheapest. We will need all the basics and plenty of beer and wine for BBQ,s

Cheers Tracy x

The biggest and I think cheapest Suremarket is ADDA on the Kas road. There is far more choice here as its huge and I believe you get a 5% discount if you are an EK member. Very good value.

Like John, we too shop in all the supermarkets depending on what we need at the time. Adda currently has some good buy one get one free offers, Kartin has some very good deals on wine, Sevil has good prices overall and of no interest  to holiday makers but certainly made me happy, is now stocking Branston Pickle and Sharwoods curry sauces at reasonable prices. Teskom also is very competitive and although small carries a good stock.

Everyone I know who lives here (mainly Turks but Brits too) has said that if any of the supermarkets offered a discount to a select group e.g. EK members, they would expect that discount to be extended to every shopper. If it wasn''t, they would take their business elsewhere.

I am at a bit of a loss to understand why EK members would be offered a discount, when the vast majority of shoppers at Adda (Turkish) wouldn''t get the same deal. It''s nothing to do with the amount spent on individual bills, since a shopper spending 10 lira a  day for  say, 250 days of the year is much more valuable to Adda than a shopper spending 300 lira three times a year.

I am concerned that because this so called discount is being promoted on EK, it could appear that Brits here on holiday would expect a discount for giving their support to any local supermarket. I am sure that is not the case. We all pay the same price for food in supermarkets, whether we are tourists with five hundred lira to spend or locals with 5.

Thanks everyone for all your information, if anyone can thinks of anything else useful it would be great to know, like do the supermarkets provide bags ? do you need money for the shopping trolleys.
