Kastellorizo (Meis)
« on: April 11, 2009, 02:19:31 PM »
Has anyone been across from Kas to Kastellorizo (Meis)? Is it worth going to? Last time we were in Kalkan we were told there is only one boat a day, leaving Kas about 10am and coming back late afternoon, is that correct?
Thanks.

Yes it''''s nice for a day in the summer - takes 30 / 40 minutes
There are a couple of boats at least that go daily and as you say, they usually leave from Kas around 10 am - BUT it is best to book and you also need to be there an hour earlier to give the company your passport so it can be checked by Immigration - it will be returned to you when you return to Kas
Depending on the season the boats usually return at 3 pm [ish]
Meis is very small and picturesque - mainly a harbour with restaurants and cafes - some shops - a nice church - a small castle and a duty free shop [small but adequate]
Usually foreign expatriates who reside here going across for a visa renewal [ but if you have a valid one on entering Turkey on holiday, this aspect won''''t bother you] and to buy pork products , bacon , salami, ham cheese, McVites digestives etc etc .............................yummy  :D

We went last year and had a lovely day. Meis itself is quite small so there is not an awful lot to do except have a wonder around and have a some food and drink around the harbour. However the scenery is wonderful and we took some beautiful photos. I would recommend you take your swimming gear and towels we didn''t last time and a welcoming dip in the sea would have been appreciated as it was very hot ! I''ve uploaded some our photos in the gallery in ''other areas'' if you want to take a look.

Can only echo what''s been said. A truly beautiful place with more than enough to keep you occupied for a few hours. The views are simply stunning from the old castle and the restaurants serve lovely fresh food.
Would highly recommend a visit.

Could anyone tell me the approx cost per person for the boat? thanks
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

We used the Meis Express ferry and they have a website at www.meisexpress.com
Meis is gorgeous and we absolutely loved it.  I agree with MrsEK - don''t forget to take swimwear and towel as you will definitely want to swim in the beautiful clear water, just don''t put your feet on the bottom because of the sea urchins.
We found it to be more expensive than Turkey to eat out as you might imagine.  A simple, but delicious, lunch for 4 was over £60.
There is a cashpoint there to withdraw Euros so no need to worry if you forget to get some beforehand.

I''ve noticed you can book for Meis with Adda on this site for £25 per person. Has anyone done this trip with Adda - seems reasonably priced with EK discount?

Did it with Adda last June - they were fine but the travel company in Kas were a bit disorganised collecting then returning passports for the Greek passport control. No one explained the procedure so it was a bit disconcerting to see everyone''s passport disappearing off in a shopping bag on a motorbike before departure and then an anxious wait for their return  when we got back to Kas.  Also disappointed that the Meis museum was closed even though it should have been open. Still worth one trip.

Alfman - sorry but that is what happens and if you were not happy you should have asked, as all of the boat captains speak very good English and they would have been happy to tell you.
It is not disorganised, as they have to register all passports with the Turkish Immigration at Kas - who then check that you are on board - then take them to Meis and register you with the Greek authorities before returning to Kas and the Turkish authorities check you back in and that you have a valid Turkish visa or if you have paid for one they stamp it in your passport
So really it is actually very well organised as it is all included in the 40 TL that you pay - so a bargain really  :D

We went with Adda and had a fantastic day

I would say it was very well organised, but, if you were not expecting the passport situation could have been confusing

Thanks for your replies. I''ve booked the four of us with Adda through EK and feel well prepared for the passport scenario. :)

Slight change of tack - does anyone know whether Turkish passport holders can go to Meis without a visa?  I appreciate a regular Greek visa would usually be required, but wondered whether the isolated nature of Meis meant that Turks could go from Kas or, as I have seen done similarly in other parts of the world, a Turk with long term settlement clearance for another (EU) country could travel.  Perhaps this is more one for our Turkish friends to answer.

Hi Eniste
Unless the rules have changed I think that the answer is no Turks cannot go to Meis without a visa
I was there last year where a German guys girlfriend who was Turkish was refused - and now that Meis has a passport  / immigration office and you can leave Meis for the outside world it is almost certainly a bigger no maybe
I am sure if you ask the boat companies such as Altug and the Meis Express they will certainly be able to advise you of the current situation
Good luck

Thanks.  I guess I''ll just have to leave Mrs E behind, chained (loosely) to the washing machine!
