The Price of Wine
« on: October 09, 2008, 10:02:42 AM »
Having just returned last week I was shocked at the price of wine compared to May of this year. In the supermarkets it has gone up to between 14YTL and 23YTL (100% increase) and some Restaurants were charging as much as 30-35YTL
As for wine by the glass in may it was 6YTL when the exchange rate was 2.4 to the pound. This time I was charged  between 8-10YTL Outrageous for a fairly inferior wine.
Unfortunately wine is my choice of tipple but when I go next year it will have to be some other option as I am not prepared to buy it at that price. (it probably won''t be something with tonic as there was none available in Kalkan last week) it may be cheaper to buy champagne at Dalaman Duty Free.

Hi There,

I have to agree with you. Paying that much for Turkish plonk is a joke. Last month Tesko were selling local wine at YTL 5.99 a bottle (red and white) but I have no idea what they tasted like!

Also a total rip off is the price of local vodka/gin - YTL 29.50 for a 70cl bottle!

I''d love to know where the Kalkan regulars buy their wine/spirits?

Wine goes down in price during winter as Turkish people tend not to drink it, you can normally get a bottle of Angora for a tenner.
I have tried some of the 5 lira wine it''s rank, but there again none of it is any good.
It''s rare to see Turkish people drinking any other spirit but raki unless its been given to them.

It''s always been really expensive to buy spirits in Turkey, lots of our friends always ask us to bring bottles from England as it''s a lot cheaper.

Hi
I bought my wine in Kas for 9 lira a litre, and it is definately drinkable! Wine in many restaurants is a high price, which I often refuse to pay, and make do with a bottle of water or an Efes.

Not sure what the legal limit is but I would say it''s cheaper to buy in UK airport.

The limit is two bottles of wine or spirits (or Champagne)per person purchased at Dalaman Duty Free (that is all thy will allow you to buy) and the prices are similar to Gatwick but at least it saves you carrying and clanking around on the flight.

In August we were buying Angora red and white for 10 or 11 ytl in the Yali...has the price gone up since then..??  Same bottles of Angora in restaurants were between 20-25ytl - which I didn''t think was bad.....????

Has Angora really gone up in price that much...????  At that rate I might have to stick to raki when I next go out..!!   :o :o

Might be worth a trip to Kas or Fethiye to see what Migros are charging for the same wine? We always buy Bombay at Manchester to drink whilst we''re there and some to take home as it''s very reasonable in Dalaman....I understand the tonic shortage was because of the Bank Holiday..people will have bought in bulk.

We like a glass of wine with a meal, so we''ll just have to bite the bullet if we want one next year and they stay at the prices The Engineer has quoted  >:(

Angora was like gold dust last week especially the white (maybe this was also to do with the holidays). I shopped at most of the supermarkets and dis not see a palatable bottle of wine under 14YTL

Angora did run out but it was in Tesco yesterday for 9.99 or 10.99ytl, there was also hardly any drinkable wines below 20 ytl a bottle at Migros is Fethiye this week.
The Tonic shortage has happened before, and it''s not much good stashing it as I had some which went out of date at the end of this month and was flat when I opened it.

I got back from Kalkan at the weekend and the Angora wine shortage was a real issue.  Many wines that we bought from the supermarket were totally corked and others had turned to sherry!  Many restaurants had increased their prices on Angora significantly, though I think the most outrageous mark up was in Aubergine when we were charged 40YTL for a bottle of Lal!!!

Ironically myself and a few friends were out for dinner at a turkish restaurant in London this week and Villa Doluca was £13.25, making it cheaper than Kalkan!!!

Well I hope their Angora stocks are back up by the time we go back at the end of October and that the prices have correspondingly come down too - back to their normal price..!!  I must say - I know  market forces  affecting demand and all that stuff dictates prices - but doubling the price in a restaurant coz there is hardly any left is a bit naughty....  >:(

We were in Kalkan last week, made the mistake of going to the Old Trading House. The drinks were extortionate, bottle of house wine 37.50YTL, small beer 5YTL. The food was fairly good, but the plates were far too large for the portions, could have eaten a pizza afterwards. The service was poor, heard someone else complain. And we had to pay 10% service on top!! The only tip they were going to get from me was that they shouldn''t have bothered opening, yet with such a pleasant girl on the door.

On another note, Gatwick duty free is a joke, very little is sold at DF prices. Wines are definately not cheap.
Johnny Walker was cheap in Dalaman, about £10.

Not just Kalkan. I was at the Hotel Sissus in Dalyankoy near Cesme a couple of weeks back and the Angora was 55TL as was the Cankaya.

How much !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is this a record do you think ? or has anyone paid more.

I feel the price of meals have been going up, the wine as always been expensive but you used to get a fair price meal now they seem much the same this year.

We were shocked at how everything as gone up this year.
